Tech Setup & FAQ: Ibanez JEM / Universe
(& many other similar guitars)

Introduction

The playability of any guitar is impacted by how well or poorly the guitar is setup. With JEM & UVs, or any floating trem, bolt-on neck guitar, I feel it setup is even more critical. The procedures outlined here are not complicated, however are best left to people familiar with the use of handtools and some form of guitar repair. If you cannot change your own strings I recommend you have a guitar tech setup your guitar ;-> Likewise if you have never removed your tremolo rear cover it is probably best that you not remove the guitar neck quite yet. Use this guide at your own risk as you can damage your guitar when performing any modification, repair or setup work on a guitar.

Before you Start

I highly recommend putting new strings on the guitar before passing judgement or making too many sweeping changes. Make sure that you understand the goal of each step before attempting any modifications. You should have at minimum each tool listed and be aware how to operate them all. All these tools like allen wrenches, screwdrivers and feeler gauges are available at hardware stores or superstores such as Home Depot, Sears, etc.

Ken Burtch of Generation Ibanez CD adds a helpful tip "I recommend that anyone who tries guitar repair read Dan Erlewine's Guitar Player Repair guide. In-depth descriptions of tools and practices are a must for anyone daring to set up their baby." Great advice Ken. We all have lots to learn about the art and science of guitar setup.

Conclusion

I'm often asked... how does your JEM7VWH compare to your JEM10 compared to your 7PBK. This is impossible to compare, unless each guitar is setup to perfection. The costliest or "best" guitar will play like a dog if it's not setup properly. In all honestly, I've noticed that the setup of the JEMs (and any axe with a double-locking trem) is crucial to their performance. Set up these guitars properly and there is no doubt that they will play like a dream. On the other hand, if they are set up incorrectly or by an amateur without reading this tech section (LOL), the guitar will suffer... feel "stiff", buzz all over the neck, wont return to exact tuning, or worse.

Remember to be very patient & take it slow... good luck!
