Comments The title of this review is the best way to describe this book. It has the essential concepts for players at every level. It has lessons to test what you've learned in each section. Everything is diagrammed out on a fretboard so reading music isn't necessary.

The book takes you through the major and minor scales, pentatonic, diminished and augmented, triads, arpeggios, 7th chords, extensions and alterations.

Liked about it This book covers all the basics, plus gives you exercises to test your knowledge of each section. I really liked that part. It's easy to look at something, play it and say, "Oh yea, I've got this.", and move on. This book will test what you've learned and at the end of the book is a final exam that tests everything that you've learned in the book. It's really a classroom text book in a way.

Didn't like Although the book pitches the idea that it's for every level, it's really designed around the beginner. So, if you're a beginner and like the fact that you'll get tested on what you've learned, then you're in luck. However, if you're a little more experienced and you're looking for more understanding of the theory behind what's going on, you're better off looking else where. This book stays away from in-depth theory discussion, opting for the beginner approach. Great for the beginner, but if you're looking for more this book doesn't accomplish that. Essentially, this book has everything that the beginner should know about guitar.

Personally, I bought it because I wanted the in-depth theory, more understanding. The reviews I read when I bought it were vague in that regard. However, at $15 new it's still a decent reference if you're more experienced. When I got it I flipped through it and said, "Nothing new for me." I've kept it though because it's a good source to use when I teach guitar to beginners.
