Not a Functional Benefit featured

Comments A while back I purchased a set of these just out of sheer curiosity. Initially I had the idea of further blacking out my Les Paul. Natural choice of course. As it turns out, being an audiophile, the sound of these string drove me nuts, and not in the good way. I believe the coating does something to the overall tone and brings out artificial sounding nuances that are not there on using most other brands. Some may like this trait, for me it didn't work out. The black still looked cool so I kept them on hoping they would tonally dull down. While waiting for such, the black started rubbing off on my fingers which led to a fingerprint on whatever I touched. That was it for the black beauty trial.

Liked about it Black color is a nice option but mostly a gimmick. There are more important things such as sound to most people.

Didn't like All around bad choice for myself. Weird sound (possibly due to materials). Sustain is cut short due to the dampening affect of the coating, which you will find is the case with almost all coated string brands. Black rubs off and makes a mess. One trick pony not worth shooting.

A great & unique looking string set

Comments I use these on my "blacked out" Fender Telecaster that has a maple fretboard. These strings not only look great but sound that way too.

Liked about it I like the feel of these strings most I think. They are smooth, without being slippery like other coated strings I've tried. These strings also seem to have helped reduce some of the brightness my Tele naturally has, and I like that.

Didn't like I would like to see these strings offered in thicker gauges so I can use them on my LTD. Currently I use the 10-46 set on my Tele which is a perfect fit.

Best Strings I've used.

Comments I first tried the DR Black Beauties (10 gauge) when the shop I teach order some for the first time. I've played pretty much all the different type of Ernie Ball Slinkys and bunches of different D'Addrio as well as Dean Markley Blue Steels and tons of other random strings not worth the mention.

There is something about the feel of the Black Beauties. They are smooth and silky feeling. But they have this "dryness" is the best word I can use to describe it that makes them just stick to your fingers which just make bending so easy.

They last forever. I normally break strings like nobodies business but I had a set of Black Beauties (9 guage) on a guitar that gets played around 6 hours everyday and they were still in...passable (if not good) condition a year later.

Liked about it 1. The feel. Smooth, dry and bendable. Amazing.
2. Colour. Seriously, that's awesome.
3. Life span. They seem to last forever.

Didn't like 1. The colour does start to flake off. Doesn't effect the string in any way other than you have spots without any colour on them. That could very well be a deal breaker for a lot of you. It will certainly happen where you pick and I've had it happen on notes I play a lot. But As I said in the comment I play a lot.

They are black

Comments I tried these last year to see if they were any better than what I was using at the time. The black was an attractive feature, but that was about all they had going for them. I had even bought two sets(second set was discounted) just in case one was a dud set. I have used worse strings but very few at this price.

Liked about it 1) They look good.
2) They are priced similar to other coated strings.

Didn't like 1) I really didn't like the tone. There was little definition on the highs, to the point of an unpleasant sound.
2) The black coating wore off quickly.
3) I tried on set on a floating trem and the B string broke after a few pulls.

great string

Comments i have been playing ernie ball strings for about a year now. and they where good. but the sound didn't last too long. so i started looking into other brands. and i had used dr strings before. so i said what the heck. lets go for it. and i ended up with great strings.

Liked about it i really liked the feel of this string. it felt really easy to bend and vibrato.and the sound keeps much longer as advertised.they also seem very sturdy. i don't fear breaking string as much as i used to.i think these strings are worth a shot.if your thinking about switching brand. or are still trying to find a brand you like.

Didn't like i haven't really found anything i don't like. sound good and are made to last. what's not to like?

Looks great, thats all.

Comments The DR Strings Black Beauties look very beautiful at the beginning, but after a lil they are pissing you off. The sound aint that great, the DR standards sound better. Oh and they break real fast, especially with a floyd rose system. There are definitely better strings out there.

Liked about it - Beautiful colors available
- Stainless Steel

Didn't like - they break real fast
- the black color will flake away, especially at the "pick-positions"
- sound awful.

I might as well bought 2 packs a smoke and air guitared it while i acquired cancer

Comments Ok, they're not that bad, but I ended up breaking a string within 30 minutes of having them on my guitar. For a pack of string that say EXTRA life on the front of the package I believe it should take a bit longer for a string to break under and circumstance...you should be able to bend that little 9 three whole steps and be cool.

Liked about it They had a good mid and bass tone, hi's were a little flat. I liked that they were black. The black wears off but any colored strings are going to do this. Sound was alright, but standard DR's show alot more promise.

Didn't like The durability of this string was terrible, I was so upset about straying from my pack of ernie ball's that was half the price and usually last twice as long, that I wanted to take of the strings and send them back to DR and tell them I was immensely disappointed. DO NOT BUY THESE...unless you play like a 90 yr old and you're not chuck berry.
