Paul Reed Smith SE Custom 22
|
Paul Reed Smiths' Student Edition range of guitars, manufactured in Korea, are certainly at the lower end of the PRS spectrum and aimed squarely at the musician on a budget.

Great guitar that will not leave you bankrupt
| Sound |
The combination of the PRS designed humbuckers, mahogany body and rosewood fretboard give this guitar a very warm sound. The bridge pick up is quite versatile and works well for blues, rock and metal and cleans up nicely when you roll the volume down. I found the neck pick up adequate but uninspiring. I felt that the bass frequencies were overpowering and tended to go muddy on a high gain settings. I tested this guitar on my Marshall JVM and my Roland Cube 30 and overall I am happy with the tone. I reckon this guitar sounds a lot more expensive than it actually is.

| Action, Fit, & Finish |
Upon purchase of my SE (I opted for the stop-tail model) I found the guitar to be set up to a high standard. The intonation was good, the nut and frets where perfect. I chose to lower my neck pick up slightly as I found it a little loud and bass-y. Likewise I raised the action to my own preference but overall I was satisfied with the set up.

| Reliability & Durability |
I've had my SE for three years now and I have little to complain about in terms of reliability. Since I've had it the output has blown once but that was easily repaired. On the point of the bridge where you rest your hand, the nickel has tarnished significantly but to me that makes the guitar more personal to me. Others might not feel the same way. The finish remains solid and she still holds tune.
