Epiphone Korina 1958 Explorer Electric Guitar

a beautiful ax
Sound
In my honest opinion, the pickups sound pretty good than I expected. Its a bit noise when you let go, although it has a very nice tone. I like to play many things like classic rock, metal, blues, and instrumental music (like Paul Gilbert). I only used my practice amp so far, which is a Marshall MG-10CD. I'm not quite sure about the brand of the strings, but it seems to feel like they are 9's. I'm going to change the strings really soon to 10's because since its a 24-3/4 scale, the tension will be much better.

Action, Fit, & Finish
The set-up is so-so. The action is pretty high and the frets are really rough. It was in a factory set-up because the local guitar store ordered it for me, which I recieved the guitar on the day the guitar arrived to the store. everything else seems to be really good so far. The intonation is perfect, the truss rod is setted good, and the pickups are setted well. I'm going to change the strings tomorrow and lower the action.
I traded my John petrucci OLP guitar with this because the neck of the JP wasn't comfortable... It wasn't thin or either it was thick... This guitar has a very beefy neck which gives a very beautiful tone! I have small hands but Paul Gilbert influenced me with his Ibanez Fireman because the neck is super thick than any other guitar. Its amazing that he sacrificed 2 frets (23 and 24) and still shreds like a god! Thats why I sacrificed my 2 frets as well.(not saying that Im good as Gilbert :P)

Reliability & Durability
I just literally got this guitar right now so what I'm going to say here might not be reliable. But I think this guitar is very durable. It didn't come with a case when I got it.... They gave me the guitar with the original box with a holder that they made with duck tape lol. I carried it home, which took me like probably between half a hour to a hour. The box isnt too supportive, but when I took out the guitar when I arrived home, it was very shinny and perfect :D

I e-mailed them for spec. infos and they were really nice.
*It seems as if some people say its made out of real korina and some don't. I asked the guys at Epiphone and they told me it was a local equivalent of korina, which are called natoh or korena.
*Neck profile is 50's rounded (.818 at 1st fret and .963 at 12th), although the guitars are hand-made so every guitar has a slightly different neck profile.

1. Really beautiful guitar. The natural finish is a blast! It cant be seen on the picture of these on the computer screen, but I seriously recommend you guys to go to the guitar store and look at it close. It is just like a real korina wood!
2. Very good tone! It was a very nice beefy neck (sorry if I ruined this news if you are an Ibanez maniac...) which gives an amazing tone!
3. Sustains!!! because of the smaller scale length.

1. The knobs... The knobs them selves are epic. Although, 2 of them are volume knobs and 1 of them is the master tone knob. Its much better imo if there were 2 tone and 1 volume. However, by having 2 volume knobs, you can do the kill switch by using the pickup selector switch :D
2. I dunno if its the frets or the strings, but some thing is very rough!(that's what she said) When I bend the strings it doesn't feel smooth... If anyone has the same problem or knows how to solve this problem, please give me a message!!!
3. It doesn't come with a case!!! (T_T)... That sucks alot!.... 80 more bucks for a hard case....
Nothing more I guess... Maybe the body size could be smaller, although that loses the monstrous effect of the guitar XD...

i love this guitar.
Sound
I had EMG 68/85 combination installed in this guitar almost strait away. This is a good move, they really rock this guitar onto another level.
As for the standard pickups, i have a korina V with the exact same pickups and i must say that they are very gibsony, or epiphoney? Either way. They suit the guitar very well but they lack oomph. Hence why an active upgrade is recommended IMHO.
HOWEVER, in the spirit of making this review actually useful, this guitar sounds stonking with the standard pickups, Very warm sound and the tone is immense as with most gibophones. (gibsons/epiphones)

Action, Fit, & Finish
This guitar suits lead or rhythm with an action that I'd describe as thick, with a chance of shred.
In clarity, the neck is rather round, but you can get the strings nice and low for the fast-licks too, its good like that.
I had a slight finish-crack near the neck. Minor really.

This guitar is like the juggernaut. Ive bashed it, whacked it, gigged it, still flawless.
This is probably because its solid and well-made. Through-necked too.Despite the manufacturing flaw in the finish (which is some kind of lacquer?) Ive never chipped, dinged or dented the finish on this guitar.
Would i gig this without a backup?
i would, and have.

Never had to deal with them.

+ the sound, despite my replacement with active EMG's for a bit more power, I'd be happy with the sound using stock pickups.
+ The build! This guitar is a tank.
+ The sheer.. playability. This guitar is like a sunny day to play. It'll certainly bring a smile to your face.
