The Epiphone Les Paul Ultra brings a new twist to a true rock guitar icon.At first glance, it might look the same, but it's not. The Ultra is loaded with hot alnico classic humbuckers. Its mahogany body has strategically placed hollow cavities ...

Best $600 I ever spent on a guitar

Sound I was astounded by the sound of this guitar for the money - particularly since it comes with what I'd call the standard Epi humbuckers - kind of that fat, warm PAF sound - not Gibsons I'll grant you, but not that far off. I thought about swapping them out for Gibsons, but hey, stick an effects pedal in there and the difference is negligible. And it is gorgeous.

Action, Fit, & Finish Couldn't have asked for better. This Korean made, US setup was dead on - a minor tweak to the tuning and all was spot on. I ended up lowering the action a smidge - at the bridge without having to do anything to the neck, and it sped the action up considerably.

Reliability & Durability Not a hint of a problem.

Liked about it The thing sounds great, feels like butter (for a Gibson type kinda narrow, kinda thick neck) and is light. Plus, it is absolutely beautiful.

Didn't like It is a tad neck heavy.

I was hoping for more

Sound I do like the the flexibility of the split magnetic & nano-mag pickup outputs, giving you a few different choices for the type of sound you want going into your amp & effects. However I feel the pickups are just a little too cold for my tastes so far. I've been able to approximate an "Angus Young" type of sound with this guitar with a enough gain in the effects chain, but I just don't get a very clean sound at that point.

I suppose you have to be used to a "Les Paul" feel in order to appreciate this guitar. In my case the guitar just isn't comfortable to wear on my body, and the neck is just a bit too wide & thick for comfortable playing.

The sounds I get form the guitar have so far been too thin for my liking. There might still be uses for this guitar in some of my recording situations when I'm going for a truly vintage sound, but considering I already have other options for good blues & early rock tones I may end up selling it.

Action, Fit, & Finish I bought it from a local guitar shop. They had it set-up well enough at the store, but within about a month I ended up with a fairly serious buzzing fret problem on the low E string.
