MIND BLOWING GUITAR! COULDNT BE WITHOUT IT! featured

Sound If you would like to hear me playing the universe go to this link and listen to the track "Living Nightmare".
im using this guitar on my new album currently being recorded and this is the first track.
www.myspace.com/robhayesrockguitar

Action, Fit, & Finish I'd long been attracted to the IBANEZ UNIVERSE and it is a perfect guitar. I'm an experienced guitar teacher and musician I've worked in a guitar shop and played many many types, but there is nothing I've played that comes close to this on every level.

I ordered mine from Professional Music Technology Birmingham. great guys there.
upon the box being opened and seeing it lying there i was falling in love. the photos don't do it justice what a "beaut" and a "brute"!.

The finish everywhere is sharply defined and perfect. the binding is all around the body, neck and headstock. the neck inlays and the all seeing eye behind the bridge are beautifully done too. the finish is in summary perfect as you would expect from an ibanez or any guitar at this price.

The action was amazing straight out the box for a factory set up. but with someone buying a guitar like this i personally believe that you should expect a approximate set up as everyone is going to want there guitars set a certain way, and im no different.
but i have noticed with every ibanez i bought they set there floyd rose systems at an angle higher on the the bass string side and lower on the high side.
i like my guitars set up a particular way. the first thing i did when i got it home was set it up how i like it to be. i don't recommend doing this if you don't know what your doing!. anyways.
i like to use gauge .008 strings. so i set it up for these with a gauge .50 for the bottom B.
this ibanez came with plenty of brass shims under the nut, it was to high for my liking to i took most of them out if not all, cant remember now. but this achieve an even nicer playing action for me. i
took out the bridge unit which on my guitar is the edge pro7 nice bridge. only gripe is that ibanez recently like to ship these bridges with the nut for the arm holder a little loose which makes the trem feel stiff as the bar holder and bar move before the bridge, so make sure that its really tight. so the arm holder on the trem does not move then your bridge will be much more responsive like the old edge and lo-pro edge. just a matter of setting it up right. the bridge was then leveled out. and tuned up,.
i was very impressed before the set up with the feel and fret work and even with my low action and light strings, i could not believe how well this played you hardly have to put any pressure down to fret a note. and there is no buzz anywhere!. I've never known a guitar this perfect.
the feel of the neck is just so slick and nice its a real dream to play and for me fits me perfect and feels like part of my body.

The pickups are amazing and deliver the best sound I've ever heard it does sound different to other guitars and it is different to the jem, it has a very clean sound and i personally love the sound for all aspects, when distorted you couldn't want more sustain chunky bottom and clean highs, you can hear it really clear but with a rich sound. harmonics are amazing to and the 5 way does offer a lot of different sounds. on clean it has an amazing pristine sound like ive not heard from other guitars. this sounds amazing for big reverb sounds and arpedgiated chords.
if your not familiar with 7 strings after a while you really start to see the difference between them and a 6 string, they are totally different instruments and both have different capabilities and limitations.
the universe is very aptly named it does open up complete versatility to you with its 2-octave neck, 5 way sound, 7 strings, the best floydrose in the world, the only limit is your creativity. all the sales stuff about this guitar is actually true.

it is very reliable and along with my jem, the universe is the only guitar i have taken on stage were i can really hear myself amongst the mix always. its true about how these jem/ universe guitars are designed to cut through the mix its true live and recording you can hear every note.

had it for a long time now, no problems at all and not broke a string yet since purchase. i couldn't recommend a guitar more to anyone if you want a 7 string.
there is no need to pause for thought, just buy one they rock on all levels,
also one neat thing to remember is that although people refer to the universe and jem as steve vai signature models, note that they don't have his name on and while they were developed for him, the guitars have always had there own name, and offered to other guitarists to use as well rather than being an advert for an artist,
the concept of these guitars was to take the strat and make it better and make it deliver what the modern musician needed. and that's what it does. so take an opportunity to try this guitar that was designed by very experienced people to take a good design and make it deliver.

Reliability & Durability i have taken this guitar to a gig without a back up, i trust it that much. it is a very tough guitar however i do treat it with care and it is in mint condition, the only reason id need a back up is if i stumbled on a battered secondhand one to take to gigs and not worry about paint. also a good excuse to buy another there that good.

Customer Support i have never needed customer support from ibanez as i have never had a problem with their products. so i have no experience of this. and i don't think i ever will. there guitars do what they say they will.

Liked about it the first 3 things that come to mind about this guitar are.
1.sounds amazing.
2.perfect in every way.
3.freedom to do anything i want musically.
one more thing i like about it is that it didn't cost me a penny as i was lucky enough to right the price of it off my tax bill. so effectivly the tax man paid for it.

Didn't like whats not to like about this guitar i cant think of anything.
hope this helps you guys looking to buy a universe.

If you can play 6, give 7 a try! featured

Sound I purchased a 1999 vintage Universe which is slightly different from the current offering. I believe that it came with the Blaze 7 pickups and for a stock guitar they sounded more than adequate for most musical styles. They had a nice full bottom end with a clear high end...but not as hot as I would've liked. I ended up changing them for a full set of white Evolution pickups. For me, the Evo pickups compliment the tone wood used and produce a tight bottom end, singing midrange and searing highs. The guitar has excellent sustain and a natural full sound. If you employ pedals/effects processors you will find that your sound will be cleaner coming from the guitar which will only improve your sound and tone.

Action, Fit, & Finish These guitars set up VERY well!!! I've owned 2 of them and they both set up the same and also playing other Universes they feel the same. The consistancy from guitar to guitar is remarkable. From the factory the guitar was almost spot on with the intonation and the pickups were very close to optimum height for proper sound, volume and playability. Action is better than average and can be set up disgusting low.

Reliability & Durability These guitars can take a fairly decent beating on the road & on stage and not miss a beat. The necks are super stable and the Edge tremolo is argueably the best on the market. I've bumped the headstock a number of times against stands and walls without having any tuning issues. This is a quality instrument that is not only built to last but also able to take bumps and keep on going.

Customer Support Never had to make the call.

Liked about it What I really loved about the guitar is that it doesn't feel like a 7 stringed instrument...it really plays like your favorite 6 string with minimal time and adjustment. If you can play 6, give 7 a try. The neck is very comfortable and feels great. The overall fit and finish is exactly what you would expect from Ibanez which is top quality with Japanese consistency.

Didn't like The only thing that I didn't really care for was the mirror pickguard and chrome hardware. What I did with mine is what I wish Ibanez would offer...a PBK Universe. Black pickguard with white pickups and cosmo black hardware. Very classy looking.

Best 7 string I've played featured

Sound I've had 2 of these guitars over time, the sound from the Blaze 7 pickup installed was what you'd expect from a high end Dimarzio pickup. It seemed balanced, the highs were well defined and the bottom end was tight. The second model I bought had Blaze Custom pickup installed in it (DP703 I believe), which gave the guitar a bit more clarity in the bass/treb area, much like a Breed pickup gives over an evolution installed into a Jem.

Action, Fit, & Finish This UV model of guitar feels effortless to play, the action can be set incredibly low with no fret buzz at all as the instrument is manufactured to a high standard. The finish of the black guitar with the chrome pick-gaurd makes it a looker whilst causing the guitar to be slightly more susceptible to minor scratching. From the factory the first instrument I bought was well setup, I didn't have to change anything at all which is quite rare for me.

Couldn't see any manufacturing flaws on the guitar from the shop, then again for the best part of £1,600 you'd hope not. I also own a 7620 RG 7 string guitar and whilst that instrument is very nice, the UV has slightly better sound, better looks and requires less effort to play due to the build quality/setup.

Reliability & Durability As with any high end Ibanez instruments you can give these things a kicking if you're that way inclined and they usually come out shining. The trem was very stable and took quite a bit of punishment whilst staying in tune flawlessly. I walked away from the guitar and picked it up 2 months later, still sat perfectly in tune. I'd definitely depend on this instrument and I've never had to bring along another 7 as a backup. The quality of the instrument speaks for itself, you can rely on this guitar to look, sound and play as well as the day you bought it. They also seem to hold value moderately well.

Customer Support I have not had to deal with Ibanez directly.

Liked about it 1) Feel of the fretboard + action, effortless to play
2) The clarity of the sound from the Dimarzio pickups were brilliant, great range
3) Looks, the guitar looks great on stage, black for metal yet reflective to catch people's eye

Didn't like What could I change... I'm not sure there is anything to be honest.
I wouldn't mind an option for buying one of these with a piezo pickup in the bridge but you can't have everything.
As far as 7 string guitars go, if you're into Jem's and the general Ibanez RG feel, this 7 will suit your needs perfectly.

The most amazing guitar, ever.

Sound If your looking for THAT guitar, the kind that feels perfect and does everything you could ever need or want, then look no further, its right here.
Of all the guitars i have played, this is the most comfortable and satisfying. The dimarzio blaze pups sound great with all 7 strings. a wide flat comfortable neck made the transition from 6 to 7 strings amazing seamless.

Reliability & Durability You can depend on the Ibanez Universe. always bring a backup in case the unthinkable happens, BUT this guitar is all you'll ever need to play.

Liked about it 1. Neck was extremely fast and comfortable.

2. Full body and neck binding added so much more beauty to an already beautiful guitar.

3. The inlays are gorgeous...this is the most amazing guitar I have ever seen of played.

Didn't like 1. I wish i had a few more of these guitars, aside from that there's nothing i don't like about it.

Amazing

Sound Firstly I run my guitars through a Peavey 6505 head and Hughes and Kettner box so can't say a lot about nice clean tones cos these amps aren't known for helping that lol but having that said what i have done on clean it sounds great Basswood body well known for its solid/warm tone specially in the neck pickup or single coil position, Now for the metal side of things i love the sound this thing throws out the lows are thick and have a nice punch the Blaze pickups do a lovely job of it i don't have much bad things to say about the sound i love it

Action, Fit, & Finish I brought this second hand so the action was spot on for me and having a close look at it there's nothing i can fault everything just feels so nice and right on the guitar its flawless

Reliability & Durability I'd play it with no backup without a doubt hardware is solid and all electric's solid from when you pick it up it just says it wont set you wrong

Customer Support N/A

Liked about it Looks amazing , Feels even better then it looks and of course that perfection we all call Ibanez neck

Didn't like Just wish it didn't look so good then i wouldn't be worried to scuff it haha

Incredible Instrument to own and play!

Sound The blaze pickups to me are a perfect match for this guitar. I think they are well suited to hard rock and all kinds of metal. They also seem to pull off other sounds almost as well, but not quite perfect. Still this guitar has been a joy to own and play. This is THE 7-string to have if you play them. bottom line. The best 7-string I've ever owned and I've owned a few different models and brands.

Action, Fit, & Finish Near Perfect right out of the box. Just needed a bit of tweaking and fine tuning. The finish was top notch. What you would expect from the Ibanez Japan factory. They pride themselves on creating beautiful instruments.

Reliability & Durability Has never let me down at all. Not a single broken string and when the strings are well stretched, has never gone out of tune badly once since I've owned it.

Customer Support no comment. Never had to deal with them about this guitar.

Liked about it Everything. A true work of art.

Didn't like I'm being nit-picky here, but perhaps the pickups could have been voiced to offer up more sounds for clean playing. They sound great, but are voiced out pretty mid-scooped almost pre-programming them for hard rock and metal. This isn't a bad thing at all, just isn't all good either. :) I still give this 7-string guitar a 5 because this minor detail doesn't take away from the overall package.

7-string dream

Sound Now this guitar is the 7-string dream. I have used Ibanez 7s like my trusted 1527 and many more, this guitar is by far the easiest to play and the most versatile in sounds.
I have absolutely no need to switch to another guitar, from thick heavy sounds to twangy cleans, I can do everything with the highes quality.
Playability of the neck and so on is also awesome. 7s tend to be harder to play because of the bigger fretboard, but the UV gives even many 6-strings a run for their money.

Action, Fit, & Finish The guitar was purchased and setup from Musik Schmidt in Germany, who did a great job on the setup. The finish of the guitar is stunning and flawless.

Reliability & Durability It has never let me down in the year I have it.

Customer Support No dealings regarding the UV, European Ibanez Support is generally very nice and helpful.

Liked about it - Sounds

- Versatility

I Quit Looking After This One

Sound This guitar is by far one of, if not the most versitile I have played. With the right tweaking and what not I have gotten a Les Paul tone, Strat, and the distinctive Ibanez sound. I run mine through Boss Proceccor, and a Mesa Triple Rectifier. Pretty straight forward. Doesn't require a room full of accessories to sound good. It has had a long run even after the fad of 7's came and went. It was there before and is still here today for a reason.

Action, Fit, & Finish Ibanez blows the competition (besides Gibson's Custom Shop-Tie) out of the water as far as factory set ups. A lot of these guitars wouldn't need anything done for 90% of the players purposes. Mine has been through the ringer and still sounds amazing, under any tone I'm going for.

Reliability & Durability For a bolt on neck, Ibanez has a good thing as far as durability. The knife edges on the Trem hold up pretty good and stays tuned well.

Liked about it Almost perfect

Didn't like Read up on string stretching or tuning is a nightmare (as with all floating bridges)
* Knife edges had to be filed

7 string thunder!

Sound What can I say about the sound. It's deep, rich and extremely well balanced for a 7 string. Clean sounds are bright and clear and the 7th string makes chords sound new and interesting. Overdriven sounds can get a bit mushy without the right EQ but once you've heard the lower strings in action you'll never look back.

Action, Fit, & Finish The guitar was set up excellently from the factory. The action was low and buzz free and felt extremely 'normal' to play even with the slightly wider neck. Paint finish is of the usual Ibanez high gloss standard and the neck inlays are cut accurately in the fret board.

Reliability & Durability Would I gig with this guitar? Without a doubt! This beauty is bomb proof and will not let you down. The finish is tough and will last for years to come and likewise with the hardware. This guitar will take a lot of abuse and still look and sound like new.

Customer Support Never had to deal with them.

Liked about it From the minute I opened the case I knew it was something special. The finish, the neck, the pick ups everything was perfect. If you ever get to play one or see one then you'll know what I mean.

Didn't like You can't dislike this guitar. It has the looks, the sounds and the feel. Get one if you can.

Black Beauty.

Sound The guitar has got loads of sounds...great for crunchy rhythm or warm lead runs. I was impressed by the sound. Sounded like my SD JB pickup on my strat. Middle pickup was noisy and it tends to lower by itself because the screw is a bit on the loose side. I used my ADA MP1 with a Marshall 9100 50/50 power amps, Alesis Quadraverb and a 2X12 Peavy cab. I liked the all of the pickups accept for the middle single coil. I changed out the crap factory 0.22cap to a Orange drop 0.22 600Volts cap and MY god it really makes the pickup sound at least 30% better.

Action, Fit, & Finish The setup and action was bad from the dealer that I bought. The guitar was not set up at the factory. The finish were great but the bridge doesn't stay in tune which kind of defeats the purpose of a locking system. I had to tight the stud using a teflon tape on the stud thread and apply a chapstick on the moving parts. Setup the action to my liking and readjusted the neck. The locknut strips off after about six month of using it. Sucks!

Customer Support Like I said Ibanez is a Slow Company, parts not easily available weather online or thru a dealer. Ibanez should improve more on that and at least release all the Ibanez parts and make easily available for their customers. Do like what Fender had done.

Liked about it The Finish.
The Looks and playability after it has been properly setup.
Sounds Good overall.

Didn't like Ibanez like to Overprice their product.

Beauty personified

Sound Lets just say my review comes from a thrash/prog/metal player!! With these styles in mind, im needing a guitar that will sing and at the flick of a switch, snarl and bite your eardrums relentlessly until you decide otherwise! My review will consist of the use of a Line6 XT PRO running through M-Audio studio monitors.
The Blaze pick-ups cover a wide tonal range that works well with various distortions and effects. The bridge is bright and punchy, the middle is soft yet clear and the neck has great definition without being to quite and muddy!! I hope that makes sense!! All done with D'Addario 9-42 and a 54 B string.

Action, Fit, & Finish Even though it was purchased second hand, it was only 12 months old. There is nothing bad to say about the UV777BK...its beautiful from input jack to the tip of the headstock....pearoid binding all over is very pretty. I couldnt find any manufacturing flaws.

Reliability & Durability UV777BK is a solid unit thats a workhorse no doubt. Id be happy to take it to a gig without a backup as long as the strings are new. The finish seems sturdy enough for the moment, but will see after a couple of years of abuse. The only thing, is that its black.......so cleaning will need a little more care to prevent swirl marks!!!

Customer Support Never had to deal with customer support but have been told they're very helpful.

Liked about it 1- Its just plain beautiful.
2- very comfortable to play.
3- AANJ allows great upper fret access.

Didn't like 1- Mirror pickguard....wouldve prefered 3 ply black.
2- Egde pro instead of Lo Pro bridge
3- No piezo :(

Not like the originals but...

Sound Tight, focused and aggressive.

Action, Fit, & Finish Esthetics on this guitar is beautifull, but i personnally do't like the ''light without heat'' logo...

Reliability & Durability Very good and well built, but compared to the original UV's that did not have AANJ, the tone suffers... Less sustain, and an instrument that is much less alive.

Customer Support Never dealt with them as a customer...

Liked about it -Looks!!! The classiest UV since the UV7PWH...
-Prestige neck is sturdier and more stable than a lot of the originals but has a completely different profile wich is not bad but different.
-They kept the Dimarzio BlazeII

Didn't like -AANJ = great access to upper register but at the expense of tone & sustain.
-Frets are HUGE compared to the 6140 from the original line up wich makes intonation suffer
-Light without heat logo... personal preference

Simply Amazing

Sound I've loved this guitar ever since i got ahold of a used one years ago. My current Universe I bought new and it has sounded better than ever. I've used it live with my Mesa Triaxis as well as in the studio with my Pod X3 Pro and it always delivers.

Action, Fit, & Finish When it arrived Ibanez had done a great job of setting it up and right out of the case it played great. I did have it setup to my personal prefs, but i still could have played it as it arrived.

Reliability & Durability Not an issue with it at all. I tend to take a little extra care with this one since i know it is my number one.

Customer Support Never had any issues for Ibanez with this guitar, but they have always been great in helping me however i need.

Liked about it Look, feel, sound!
