Pleasantly surprised!
Sound
I bought this guitar after trying a Jackson warrior. It far superior than the jackson in every way. I wasn't expecting too mufrom the D'Activator pickups, but I was quite surprised with how good they sound. I'm a big Active pickups users and was skeptical. I have Seymour Duncan Blackouts in almost everyone of my guitars. The D-Activator pickups are pretty killer. Definitely keeps huge Dynamic Range and very clear! I play mostly hard rock and metal and that's exactly what this guitar was made to do. I play the Xiphos through a Mesa Boogie Mark IV Combo, sounds killer. It really kicks with high gain amps. I had a ENGL Screamer Combo for a bit that the Xiphos sounded AMAZING on! I usually play D'Adario 10's, but I believe come setup with 11's and they seem to work well with the D-Activators.

Action, Fit, & Finish
Action was great right out of the box. I rarely have to make any adjustments on new Ibanez guits. Sweet neck through very smooth neck, tight action, excellent playability. A shredders dream! The finish is pretty wicked! I normally don't go for such a crazy glitter finish, but it's pretty amazing. the color of the finish changes between red and green depending on the viewing angle of the guitar. It's pretty cool!
The fit is perfect for me. I like how comfortably it sits in both Classical position and standard rock knee position. Some people say it's top heavy, but I havent experienced that at all. I feel the guitar is very well balance and somewhat ergonomic.

Reliability & Durability
I've had the Xiphos for about about 2 weeks now and have already banged it around quite a bit, but still no chips in the finish. The guitar is quite sturdy and feels like it can take a beating when you are holding it.

Customer Support
Haven't had to contact them regarding the Xiphos, but overall Ibanez has pretty good, if not above average customer service

1. Neck thru body
2. Playabilty/Feel
3. D-Activator pickups

To be honest, for the price (epecially what I paid for it, $499) There isn't much not to like about this guitar. If I find something I dont like along the way I'll be sure to post an updated review

Interesting Axe
Sound
The pickups have no tonal definition between them. It doesn't matter if you use the neck or bridge pickup because the sound will be the same. Leads sound expressive, but chords, especially played on the bridge pickup sound muddy. Otherwise, the sound was clear and articulate. It has a very playful sound.

I'd be able to gig this. The edge 3 is easy enough to block for a string change if needed. It also looks pretty funky

It was comfy to play in a classical position or in standard (over one knee) position. For a star shape, it had great balance.
It was great to have a recessed output jack that didn't get in the way of playing.
For an import, the neck was fretted with great precision.

In a classical position, the upper horn (near the top side of the neck), should have been made a tad bit longer for better balance. I also wasn't fond of the D Activator pickups. At its price point, I would have preferred a maple fretboard to give clarity to the pickups.

Great Guitar
Sound
The sound of this guitar is great, the neck pickup is really quite twangy in clean and bright in distortion, the bridge does crunch well and the strings are picked up equally through the pickups.
|
Action, Fit, & Finish
The action was good from the factory, the finish looks stunning and all of the parts were assembled correctly and fitted properly.
|
Reliability & Durability
It is a dependable guitar, I could play at a gig without a backup and I would for the looks and the feel, the finish is indestructable and the trem stays in tune well enough.

I love the looks of this guitar, with the reverse heastock, matching inlays and the insane body shape.
The guitar plays quite well and I can play it for a long time without feeling discomfort.
This guitar will get you noticed, it has a very outstanding look and sound and it pays off.

The only thing I don't like is that for roughly the same price I could get an Ibanez Prestige which has a much better feel (this feels good, not great). One thing I wish that would be different is that it had more paint options.
