Crate GX-15R: Perfect for beginners...Or bedroom shredding!!!
| Sound |
I have used this amp for many guitars. It sounded bad because I used junky beginner guitars you can win at carnivals. When I bought my first real guitar which was an Ibanez, I realized the bad sound quality was not because of the amp at all, but the cheap guitars I owned. The amp sounds great for a beginner amp.
I often play a lot of power metal and neo classical stuff, so I have the "Overdrive" button pressed 99% of the time. It sounds great with all the equalization options cranked up and the overdrive master volume turned up quite a bit. When it is set like this, I can hit pinch harmonics pretty easily. I am not able to produce pinch harmonics if the overdrive master volume is on its lowest setting.

This beginner/practice amp has served me well for those purposes. It is inexpensive and pretty good quality. I would never gig with it unless it was in a small room or coffee shop or something in that nature. But if I did, I wouldn't need another practice amp.

1) Very compact and is still a decent sounding amp.
2) Good clean and overdriven sounds.
3) You can find them for a very good price used.

1) When you turn the reverb up, the amp starts to hum very loudly after a few minutes of playing.
2) When turning the volume up from 0, I have to turn it up pretty high, then bring it back down to 0, and then up again for it to work. This could be an issue with just mine. It was made in the mid 90's.
3) You can still hear some output when the master volume is at 0 when the overdrive button is pressed. This isn't necessarily a bad thing to some.

Perfect practice amp, even better for beginners.
| Sound |
This a well sounding practice amp. I used it manily with Ibanez guitars and it just sounds great. I like to play rock with a edgy sound, with a little hair. For home use my settings are; Gain:9, OD-level:3, Level:3, Low:6, Mid:3, High:7, Revb:9
The Overdrive button is pressed in most of the time because hey, I like rock.
And when it's not pressed the Clean is not distorted at all and sounds just clean as it should. And offcourse if you like to shape it a little more you can hook up a Chorus pedal to it. And for some Leads a Distorion pedal.

This amp is a great amp to start with or as a practice amp at home (or where ever). I have this amp since 1998 and is still doing what it should be doing and that is reliability right there.
It's good to use in a small setting or a small venue but only when it's miced.
