Marshall 1960BV 4x12 Cabinet

The Marshall 1960V Vintage Speaker Cabinet puts out beautiful tone at any volume. The addition of an impedance (4 or 16 ohm) mono/stereo switching mechanism has transformed the "industry standard" 1960 into the ultimate speaker cab. This 280W Marshall cab is loaded with Celestion Vintage 30 speakers.

An excellent cabinet for that Marshall crunch featured

Sound My main guitar/ amp setup is a Gibson Les Paul with 490R/ 498T humbuckers through an Egnater Mod 50 with the Bassman and SL2 modules. I play metal and jazz styles. Out of all of the Marshall cabs I have owned, this is the only one that I still own. I am not saying that Marshall cabs are bad by any means. Let's face it, 'everyone' has used Marshall cabs. This one just seemed special for some reason. There are basically three different versions of the current Marshall 1960 cabinet. The only real differences in these versions are speakers and in the case of the 1960AX and BX cabs, slight aesthetic differences. 1960 cabs have Celestion G12T-75 speakers, 1960V cabs have Celestion Vintage 30 speakers, and 1960X cabs have Celestion Greenbacks. The A refers to the top or 'slant' cab, and the B refers to the bottom or 'straight' cab. Out of all of these cabs, the 1960AV and BV cabs are the most versatile in my opinion. The reason is because of the Vintage 30 speakers. I also did a review for a Mesa Boogie Stiletto cab with the same speakers, which I currently own. Why would own two cabs with the same speakers? Because the cabs sound very different and that is due to their construction differences. The thing I like about Marshall cabs is their looseness. It is as much of a sound thing as a feel thing. The way the cabinet responds to the note(s) I am playing is a big part of the character of the cabinet. The notes tend to feel very squishy and seem to kinda blend a little, which is good if that is what you are going for. It is very pleasing to the ear and gives it that 'vintage' aesthetic. The Boogie is much more modern, efficient, and bass heavy. Just think of cabinets as different flavors of ice cream. I like vanilla and chocolate, but sometimes I just want vanilla. I also should mention that this cabinet has the straight front instead of the slant baffle. I like the straight cabs for their aesthetics and they tend to project in a way that they sound a little smoother and not so ice-picky. This cab could be used in all types of music really. The guy who owned the cab before me actually played in an R&B group, so that says it right there.

Reliability Well, just like I have mentioned before, Marshall tends to skimp a little on quality here and there. The cabinet itself is built very well with birch ply, but the back is made of particle board which kinda makes me scratch my head. Also, the handles and input jacks are made of plastic. The handles WILL eventually break unless you keep the cab at home all of the time. Also I have heard of the plastic input jacks cracking or the stereo circuit card going bad, so those are two other things to worry about. I replace all of that stuff with more durable components, including thicker gauge wire.

Liked about it Classic looks
Warm crunchy sound
nice loose soulful feel

Didn't like Cheap handles, jacks, wire
Particle board back

industry standard stuff here.

Sound Any amp you plug into this cab is going to sound absolutely awesome. Will recreate any style of music easily. The vintage 30's they use are clear, have great tone, great bottom end, simply great great speakers. When you put a high gain head on this cab it rips your face off. The cleans sound extra clean with a great bottom end and highs.

Reliability 4x12 cabs from Marshall are very reliable, They're all I used for 20 years, I just wish they built them more like they used to.

Liked about it The gain on any head sounds super through this cab. I love everything about this cab except the construction and materials. I can't believe the sound you get out of the build. I guess cutting corners the way they did hurt the sound some but these cabs sound killer regardless.

Didn't like If this cab could sound better with better quality wood/metal handles/back ply instead of particle board etc, why the hell don't they build it like that? Other then that it sounds great...sad that it could sound better though.
