THD Hot Plate

The THD Hot Plate is one of the most beloved output attenuators on the market. What is a power attenuator? A power attenuator is a device placed between the speaker output and the speaker cabinet. It acts like a huge master volume control and permits the amp to be turned up most or all the way while absorbing most of the power generated by the amplifier and turning...

Crank that amp but keep the cops off your doorstep

Sound THD makes these in a variety of impedance's so make sure you buy the one that matches your amp. They are NOT adjustable like some brands. This is a must with an old school tube amp that you have to crank to get it to give up the goods. My Plexi didn't have a master volume so I had to crank it up and boost the front end with a SD-1 to get the grind happening. I realized pretty quickly that I needed a quality attenuator to tame it's absolutely BRUTAL volume. This one is built like a tank. It has stepped selectable attenuation; -0db, -4db, -8db, -12db, -16db (with variable control from 0 - full) and load. It also has deep and bright switches that let you change the EQ a little to enhance your tone when you are using heavey attenuation. The other great feature is an adjustable line out on the back for reamping. I used mine for knocking a few dbs off the top and for reamping my Plexi in a wet/dry rig so I could place my time based effects between the THD's line out and my power amp. My Plexi didn't have an effects loop so besides using the Hot Plate for attenuation it provided an effects loop when reamping. I've also used it in the load setting for late night practicing and run the line out to my SS power amp. This is a much better sounding option that using very high attenuation. Attenuators will compress your sound and effect the tone of your amp with heavy attenuation so if you think you will be able to crank your amp on 10 and play at bedroom volume and have it sound exactly the same your not. There is no detectable tone change with the Hot Plate set at -4db through -8db, a very slight difference at -12db but a noticeable difference at -16db and the higher attenuation setting you use on the variable control the more extreme it gets. If you want to use it that way and have another amp to run the signal through set it to load and run the line out through a clean amp.

Reliability Solid as tank. I would be shocked if it broke down. There really isn't much in them that can go wrong.

Customer Support Great customer support, one of the best in the business. The manual is also very informative but if you have a question don't hesitate to call.

Liked about it It's solid construction, adjustable line out and deep/bright switches

Didn't like No selectable impedance.
