The Line 6 evolution continues featured

Sound I play mostly rock/metal/shred style guitar. I play McNaughts and Suhrs exclusively and my guitars are loaded with either Dimarzios, EMGs or Suhr Aldrich signature pickups. I recently wrote a review of the H & K TriAmp and neglected to mention my guitars so I am making up for that here. The Line 6 Spider Valve is a great little amp. This is my practice amp and I will use it in a pinch or where either of my other rigs are too much to take to a studio session or a gig. I use mostly Hughes and Kettner amplification and I run this amp thru an H & K 4x12 cabinet with Celestion 30s and it sounds pretty damn good! The sounds are all over the place and amazingly enough, if you really tinker with the knobs you can dial in some unique tones. For pure shred I just like the "Amber Insane" setting with the gain dialed to about 3 o'clock and gets a nice glassy, compressed tone. Of course, since it's a Line 6, it's going to have a whole bunch of models to play with so I would suggest just spending a few hours and really play with it. Plugged into the right cabinet, it really sings.

Reliability I have used Line 6 stuff in the past live and I have never had issues. This amp that I have is strictly for practice but if I am in a situation where I don't need my rack rig, I can toss a 2 X 12 cab and this into the back seat of my car and go to a gig. So, once and a while it's reliability will be tested.

Customer Support I have dealt with them in the past and they are pretty good for the most part. Nice people, and they seem to care about their products. I know I have heard other experiences being not-so-good but they were just fine when I had to deal with them.

Liked about it Keep in mind that I am reviewing this based on the "version II" of this amp released just a few months back. This has even more features than the first version so I like that they added a small looper, compressor and the gain knob is a bit more responsive. I also dig the tone of the super clean and super shred settings. I used to have a Soldano SLO 100 and I was able nail the tone with an old Flextone II amp from Line 6. I swear I'll nail that on this amp too. Also, you gotta love that the power-amp section is Bogner. One of my main live rigs is using the Axe-Fx Ultra thru a Mesa 20/20 so I know all about the non-tube preamp to tube amp setups. Oh, and don't forget the price. Under a grand and you have a one-stop-shop, or as I like to call it - a swiss army knife.... :)

Didn't like Version I had more balls to it, and version II here seems to be "more like a tube amp". It's Line 6, it doesn't need to respond like a TriAmp, or a Mesa Mark V, or even a Bogner Ecstacy. I can appreciate Line 6 trying to do more with it though. Also, the presets... I mean, really? Stop doing them - nobody is going to use them. Save the computing cycles for more effects or better effects. The presets are terrible and in an amp that is as nice as this they don't need to screw it up with lousy presets.

Great all in one package amp

Sound This review is for the 2x12 combo that I use as a head, running through a Carvin Legacy 4x12 cab, and using a 06' Schecter C1 Classic. The sounds I get from my rig supply me with everything I need. The clean channels are sparkling and the high gain channels allow me to do rhythm and solo work.

Reliability I have had this amp for over a year now and I have had no trouble at all. Its built quite structurally well but I am not about to just drop it and see if it still functions =p.

Customer Support I've dealt with Line6 customer service previously (pertaining to Pod Farm and UX/Toneport series) and have always had good communications with them. They have always gotten back to me within the day.

Liked about it -great effects
-lots of different presets
-price =D

Didn't like -flanger/phaser has too much treble for my tastes
-most of the presets sound awful, better off dialing in your own sound
-wish it had stand alone chorus effect

...If you want everything built in.

Sound At the time of using this I was using a guitar equipped with an EMG 81 in the bridge and an EMG 85 in the neck (I did eventually flip these round though... a story for another review). The amp sounds nice. It sounds like what it is; a hybrid between solid state and tube. Some settings sound almost full tube, some don't. The tones need finding but most of them ARE THERE SOMEWHERE.

Reliability Didn't have it long enough to test the reliability I'm afraid. If I were to guess I would say it's reliable- my friend has a Line6 Spider 3 and its been hammered, its still like new on the inside though!

Customer Support Not really dealt with LINE6.

Liked about it -EXTREMELY VERSATILE!
-BUILT IN Effects!
-Great Floorboard compatability!

Didn't like -It's not a 100% tube signal path, (but not many guitarist's full rigs are 100% tube either.)
-On board effects aren't great.
-Channel Volume is different with every preset, I had some pretty nasty volume shocks when using this!
