With 3 knobs labeled "Mix" (the wet/dry output mix), "Regen" (the delay regeneration amount), and "Delay" (the time between repeats); the MXR Carbon Copy is not only incredibly user friendly, but a sonic delight to the ears. It is also equipped with a "Mod" button that allows for a slight oscillation in the delays to simulate old school tape echo (very well, I might add). This modulation also has two internal trim pots inside the pedal to change the width and depth of the oscillations to dial in that perfect flutter!

The MXR Carbon Copy is all analog, and from the first time you fire it up, you can certainly tell! From short slapback delays, the Carbon Copy preserves your original signal and picking dynamics like a well crafted analog studio delay should - allowing you to explore musical passages and rhythms with incredible natural accuracy. As you increase the delay time, the Carbon Copy responds by greeting you with more and more full and rich analog glory. You can layer your sound sweetly by rolling the mix knob up or keep it low to fatten it up for a more "post production studio sound"; this pedal does it all! As you increase the "Regen" knob past the 12 o'clock position, you reach into the infinite repeat zone; here you get EPIC delays - enter the experimental sounds and the 600ms delay time doesn't seem to limit you at all, sounds can pile up and fall into infinity with amazing results; the kind of sounds that can only come from analog electronics. Clean tones with the Carbon Copy are spectacular; no transistor sounds here, just pure analog warmth and the sound of your guitar. With gain the Carbon Copy also performs like the champ it is. Although slightly louder (which requires dialing the mix back slightly) the Carbon Copy perfectly takes your signal and duplicates it from a crisp shortness to rich, long delays. MXR also added a modulation feature to emulate the sound of a tape echo. With the button engaged it adds a slight oscillating flutter to the repeats which can especially be heard on the last couple repeats at the end; its very very nice and natural sounding! There are two internal trim pots to further fine tune the sound of the oscillations (although I found the factory settings fine for my tastes.) Another fun bi-product of its all analog construction to turn the "Regen" up all the way, and play a note - the pedal can self oscillate, and you can control the timbre with the "Delay" knob creating all kinds of wild outer space sounds and UFO noises! The bright blue LED indicators for both the main switch and the "Mod" buttons are FANTASTIC for seeing on stage and low light situations; since the pedal is a cool sparkly green color, it makes it harder to see on stage, but it lights up very well. The pedal is also true bypass, so it doesn't suck tone while off or on; also the switch doesn't make any "clunk" or sounds while engaging or disengaging.
Simply put, this pedal is a delay that in its price range, can't be beat!

I have used it live and in the studio many many times and dozens of gigs without a backup. It hasn't failed me (but has collected some grime). Its casing is rock solid, and doesn't make any noises or have any scratchy potentiometers; I would say it's going to serve me a long time to come. I would buy another one in a heartbeat if this one ever broke or got stolen!

Simple and reliable -- good for gigging.

It really doesn't get any easier than this. It is a simple analog delay pedal with a regen (saturation), delay time, and mix (how much you can hear the delay in the guitar signal). The pedal is simple, and that is what it is meant to be.

| Sound |
Analog delay sounds more "distorted" than digital delay. Purists usually go for analog as it does have it's uses for certain sounds. However, I will never use analog delay on clean tones if you want to keep the sound "clean." Get a digital delay for that. Analog delays (almost all pedals) tend to have a distorted "old school" delay which does sound very good for what it is.
In essence, it sounds amazing for distortion and good for cleans IF you are looking for a distorted delay sound. If you want a pure wet/clean delay, get a digital.

It does what it is suppose to do and does it well. It is quiet on stage and has 800ms of delay which is plenty for most people. It is also built solid and will be reliable during gigging. Try out a digital and analog pedal at a store before you decide which version you like -- they are quite different. That being said, the MXR is one of the many good analog delay pedals on the market.

The Perfect Analog Delay Pedal

With a 3 nob eq and a mod button it doesn't get much more simple then this. Basic delay pedal functions.

Great tone, great break up in the delay. Very transparent, but still has that analog tone.
Has absolutely no loop noise. Very silent. I use two of them and I love the way they don't taint my tone at all. No volume drops or boost just a nice clean delay.

Great, low-fi delay

If you like low-fi, tape like delay and don't need a sampler, you can't go wrong with this one. I was able to dial in exactly what I wanted within seconds. The sound degeneration is pretty cool sounding if you like vintage delay. The Mod switch adds some chorus which is an added bonus as well. Great for clean playing.

Bad AC jack placement. It would be cool if they could add an internal dip switch that would allow you to set the chorus to stay on when the delay is switched off so that the pedal could be used in either capacity.
