Marshall Jackhammer
|
The pedal contains our most extreme distortion levels to date, combined with a Contour section that allows you not only to scoop out the mids, but also choose the frequencies at which the scoop occurs. This means that you can tailor your sound to your own individual requirements. Although the Jackhammer has more aggression and gain than any other Marshall pedal, we nev...

Jack of all Distortions?
| Ease Of Use |
If you are used to distortion pedals this is a bit more tricky. While it has the same controlls as most distortions, the reaction to the knobs is somewhat different.
The Volume/Gain is pretty self explanatory, but at least in my unit was not totally linear. It gets from slight crunch to pretty gainy rather quickly and then goes from gainy to very heavy gain (though not extreme) slightly slower. Could also be subjective. The other knobs are also pretty self explanatory with Bass/Treble and Contour. You can shape your sound with that ones, but they are pretty tricky, as they react to the slightest touch and alter your sound quite a bit. Then there is the OD Mode Switch which pretty much gives you 2 types of distortion.

| Sound |
Now first I was totally unsatisfied with the sound of this unit, as I was a little bit in a hurry to test it out. It altered the sound of my used guitars so much (Ibanez 1527, JEM 7vwh and Iceman through Clean of a JSX Stack) that I could not really hear the difference between my guitars anymore. Also heavy gain got really mushy in both modes.
But I thought I rather not give up on this unit so fast, so I really took time to dial in a sound that was quite "Satchy". It really took me quite some time, but then it sounded really OK. You still can hear that it is no tube distortion and the treble is hard to control with just the one knob, we could solve it with an EQ in the line though. The pedal is also quite noisy at higher gains, so I would recommend a noise gate in your effects chain.
After you get used to the pedal there actually is a wide range of sounds you can dial in and it also get be pretty heavy and darkish. Also there seems to be no unit exactly like the other, shop owner took a second one out for me and I needed a whole 45min to dial in the same sound as on unit one...
If you are game however there are some pretty cool sounds in that unit, that you might not get elsewhere and still quite Marshally tones.

Terrific pedal, not for beginers.
| Ease Of Use |
Probably my only downfall to this pedal, is that it can really be mind-numbing to sit down with this thing and tweak for a while. Although this does give it more versatility, if you need to pull up a quick patch, this isn't for you.

The sounds that i could get out of this pedal were near endless. I could pull up a good, compressed Metallica tone, or a more drawn-out over driven, Iron Maiden tone. You can get a great range with the 3 concentric pots and the dist/OD knob.

I have been stomping like hell on this thing for almost a year now and have not had the slightest of issues. I would usually be cautious before bringing anything to a gig without a backup, but this is not one of those cases.
