Zoom G7.1ut
|
High-resolution, 24-bit, 96kHz guitar modeling and effects with a real 12AX7 tube! Amp models use both DSP and tube for supreme realism. Huge number of effects--92--with 9 usable at once. Easy-to-use with expression pedal, knobs, and big LCD screen. Headphone and 1/4" stereo outs. USB port for recording; includes Cubase LE for Mac/PC.

Amazing on a solid state amp, not so nice with tube amp
| Ease Of Use |
The Zoom G7.1ut is fairly easy to use, as far as floorboard multi-fx modellers go. The control layout is nice and neat, and the screen provides enough basic patch editing information.
Hooking the G7.1ut to your PC using midi cables opens it up even more. You can download Zooms G series software, and it gives you a nice editing interface where you can transfer your patches back and forth between the G7.1ut and computer.
The stomp switches are nicely spaced so it is easy to accurately hit your mark. The button to engage the expression pedal is a little harder though. I ended up taping something to the knob on the bottom of the pedal to make engaging the switch underneath a little easier to hit.
Getting a decent sound out of the unit was fairly easy too with a little tweaking. Choose your preferred amp model, get your eq and gain, etc, and your basic sound is ready to go.

I had my G7.1ut plugged in to the effects return of my Kustom KGA65 solid state 1x12 combo. I used it predominately with EMG equipped guitars.
I was quite able to get some great sounds, both for live work through an amp, and direct to PC recording using the usb interface.
I found the 12AX7 not to be a gimmick, and it was actually quite noticeable as you dialled in the the tube effect.
My favourite basic amp model setting was the Marshall JCM800 amp model with a boost to push the gain levels. It was capable of providing a real big Marshall crunch, and the boost really pushed it into high gain territory.
The rest of the brand name amp models are great as well, but the JCM800 suited my sound to a tee. With a wide range of low and high gain models available there will be a sound to suit most players.
The thing I loved with the G7.1ut was that it was really capable of acting like a tube amp. I could roll the volume down on my guitar and have the tone clean up quite nicely, and harmonically the unit was quite close to achieving that distinctive tube sound.
The collection of effects is superb too. There is almost all the effects you could want on board, and the expression pedal allows you to really play with them too.
My preferred effects setup is a quite minimal one though. I am content with an analogue delay for solos, digital delay for soundscapes, flanger for crazy tones, and the occasional wah. The G7.1ut has extensive control to edit the effects, and they all sounded great to my ears.
So the G7.1ut sounds like an amazing unit? Well it is, until you hook it up to a valve amp.
When I got my Blackstar HT-5 I decided to try it out with the G7.1ut in the effects return, and was really disappointed. The amp models through the tube power section just got really muddy and sounded really average.
I was hoping to use the G7.1ut as an effects base through the loop, but it is not capable of working like that. It's big brother, the G9.2tt is designed to be used in this way, but the 7 model simply cannot function as an effects board.
I thought this was a real shame as I loved the effects on the Zoom unit, and would have loved to use it for this purpose. I wished that I had saved a bit more and bought the 9 model originally.
So in closing, if you are playing through a nice solid state amp, or intend to use the G7.1ut as a direct recording tool, or play through a PA the G7.1ut will suit you nicely. If you plan on using it on a valve amp for multi-effects don't. Save up a bit more for the G9.2tt.

The G7.1ut is built nice and solidly. I did have a faulty footswitch on my unit, but it was promptly fixed by the distributor.
