DiMarzio DP152 Super 3 Guitar Pickup
|
The long-time "go-to" pickup for scooped mids is a monster in its own right.

My long-time standard bridge pickup for heavy rock.

If the Super Distortion started it all, the Super 3 finished it. They could have just as easily called this pickup, "The Punisher" and been accurate. With specs like 435 mV output (more than a Super Distortion but less than an X2N), 25K DC Resistance (more than any other DiMarzio pickup), and an EQ curve of Bass=6.5, Middle=8, and Treble=5 this pickup is all about driving your amp HARD. With that EQ curve you might think that the Super 3 would be too boomy, but they managed to get in just enough higher frequencies to prevent that from happening. Clean, the Super 3 sounds almost acoustic playing chords and jazzy and warm on single notes. These sound clips were taken with the Super 3 installed in the bridge position of my RG550MXXDY, and the sounds come from the same Line6 POD Farm patches I use for all my sound clip demos. Distorted, chords are big and full with good thump and presence. It's a bit difficult to tell from this sound clip because of the POD Farm setup being used (Screamer into Jump Plexi). Trust me--put this into any modern high-gain gear and this pickup will pound the paint off the walls.

More thump and grind than the Super Distortion.
Black pole pieces standard, not a special order--wicked-good/evil looks.
Holds its own on clean settings as well. You can get away with less pickup switching.

I wish it compressed a little more like the DiMarzio Norton.

One of the best

I used this pickup in a Fender "The Strat". It sounded great. I couldn't figure out what made this guitar sound so good, then I bought another, and the person I bought it from said, check out the Super 3 that are in these. It's one of the best Dimarzio's out there in my humble opinion.

Great growl, and distortion, but not over the top. Not that spikey treble, but not too boomy. All the notes just bloom with sustain, and it just sounds perfect for the type of music I played, such as Jackyl, Lynard Skynard, Ted Nugent, etc, etc,.. Mostly 70's and 80's rock / glam / metal.. It does Scorpions perfect, Ted, Thin Lizzy, etc,.. Black Sabbath, etc,..

Super!

great pickup! It goes into my Ibanez sjcrg1 with mahogany/maple body, replacing a PAF pro.
It's a dark sounding pickup, yet it retain bottom end tightness, and it has just enough presence to cut through well.
All that quality turn my RG into a sledgehammer for metal riffs..! Really thick and heavy sounding palm mutes. It also handle drop D tuning very well.
It's solo sound is very interesting as well.. dark, thick, and juicy, almost misterious sounding.. Notes carry a lot of weight and sound 3D compared to PAF Pro.
Quite a surprise considering its output, it doesn't sound bad at all for cleans, it doesn't sound honky like some other hi output pickups.

1. Great voicing and output!
2. More versatile than I thought it would be
3. It's one of dimarzio's less-common model

1. Maybe a little more presence/cut would be great
2. Wish it had black baseplate like evos/breeds
