DiMarzio DP166 The Breed Bridge Pickup
|
A great alternative if you like the classic PAF tone but you're not a fan of the PAF PRO.

Good crunch to be had right here!!

In contrast to the Breed Neck pickup, I like the Breed Bridge pickup a LOT more. This pickup has all of the great PAF tone that we've come to know and love. Like I wrote for the Breed Neck pickup, if I didn't mention it I could easily pass off this tone as having come from a Les Paul. The bridge and neck pickups are surprisingly close in specifications (as are vintage PAF pickups) and this one delivers the goods--nice crunchy tone that would work well in a wide variety of styles. Also, clean, this pickup doesn't sound brittle or overpower the tone with treble which just adds to its versatility.
After playing the pickup for a couple of minutes I fell into a Scorpions vibe, so you'll notice some of that in the sound clips. All in all, DiMarzio has delivered an EXTREMELY versatile bridge pickup. The highs are well-defined without being shrill, and the lows are nice, tight, and punchy without being boomy.

Can give an RG (or probably any other guitar) nice PAF/Les Paul tone with a modern vibe.
Overdrive/distortion comes across powerful but not over-the-top.
Sounds tight without being overly-compressed.

To use a Filipino word: "Mismo!"

A little backgrounder: I was looking for an adequate replacement pickup set for my RG2550E as it had the DiMarzio/Ibz set that, while not necessarily bad-sounding, are a bit too tinny for my tastes. I wanted pickups that are warmer but not muddy, and checking out the pickup picker at dimarzio's site I came across the Breed Bridge. I got the Air Norton to match it, too.
To make the long story short, both of these humbuckers are now my favorites for RGs.
The Breed Bridge, in particular, is a monster, and made the DiMarzio/Ibz and Evolution Bridge pickups I had at the time sound anemic. Played clean, it was fat but controlled without much breakup (I believe this is the lowest output distortion-class humbucker in the DiMarzio line). With gain, it becomes buttery but still articulate. It chugs like a mofo, and all the punch that floyd-equipped guitars lose due to the nature of the bridge is brought back by the Breed's incredible low end. Delightfully(Sorry I ever had to bring this up), fast picking and shredding licks are still clear and articulate, not to mention very bold-sounding, despite the powerful chunk this pup produces. Split the Breed becomes snappier, though still bearing that strong bottom end signature.
With the Air Norton in the neck, and the ability to get split coil sounds with the middle single coil, I believe I have found one of the most versatile and useable pickup configurations ever. I think I'm in love.

Nice pickup for shred freaks!

I installed an F-spaced Breed humbucker in the bridge position of my wife's Ibanez Jem 77VBK. As with all Dimarzio pickups, it was easy to install. I'm a Dimarzio man, and jumped at the chance to install this new pickup.

I love the throaty mid range of this little monster. It's capable of providing some nice mid range, but still have enough low end growl to satisfy the rockers. This pickup doesn't have as much power as some other Steve Vai models, and is more reminiscent of classic humbuckers--still packs enough punch to rock out, though.

There is nothing I didn't like about it. It's not as hot as some other models, but I knew that and didn't expect a box of unleashed banshees when I bought it.
