DiMarzio DP216 Mo'Joe Humbucker Pickup

Joe Satriani has used the Fred(R) as his main bridge pickup for years. This year Joe asked DiMarzio for a hotter and bigger version to replace the Fred(R) in his new Ibanez guitars. The new model called the Mo' Joe(TM) is all about tone and definition. It's name says it all. It has more power than the Fred(R), but it doesn't sacrifice clarity or dynamics. Additionally...

More than a one trick pony

Comments I installed this pick up on my Ibanez RG370 nearly a year ago and I'm very pleased with the overall sound. It shines when you play from clean (in split position) to hard rock but it struggles with heavier stuff.
Recreating the pinch harmonics made famous by Satriani is no problem with the Mo' Joe. It's an overall great pick up when you don't play heavier music than Satriani.
When split it gives a clearer and warmer sound than any other bridge humbucker I've played, so I would assume players that play mainly clean also would want to try this pick up.
It clears up nicely when you roll down the volume knob on your guitar when playing through a distortion pedal. Turning the tone knob down doesn't affect the tone too drastically compared to other humbuckers and I've never experienced the Mo' Joe as muddy.

Liked about it Great pickup both for moderate gain and clean.
Responsive and warm.
Rich harmonies.

Didn't like Anything heavier then Metallica's self titled album will get the Mo' Joe in trouble. While it shines with hard rock and metal up to apx. this point it cannot handle anything harder. (The "Black Album" used as an example as most readers has heard this particular album).

Feel the MoJoe!

Comments This badboy was installed in my Ibanez SZ720FM after I removed the existing Crunchlab to put in another guitar. Dimarzio says its a medium output pickup, but it's not far off from the Gravity Storm (320 vs 340 according to Dimarzio).

To my ears it sounds like an articulate PAF PRO that's on steroids. Harmonics are unreal with this pickup too. On the clean channel the tone has a mild jangle (which I attribute to the guitar more so than the pickup) which gives it some character.

I'm really wanting to get this wired up to a push/pull pot to see how close it comes to a strat/tele sound. Excellent choice if you play hard rock and/or 80's metal.

Liked about it -Articulate
-Harmonics for days
-Priced cheaper when purchased as a set with the PAF Joe

Didn't like -Only offered in black when purchased as a set with the PAF Joe.
