Dimarzio DP215 Evo 2 humbucker Featured

From Dimarzio: - The original Evolution bridge guitar pickup did exactly what Steve Vai wanted it to do: kick butt and produce serious scream. The Evo 2 DP215 bridge pickup was designed to be more complex - the same basic tone with increased headroom and dynamics, so that the sound kills on 10 and cleans up when the volume is rolled down. With a little less power than the original Evolution, Evo 2 balances perfectly with the Evolution neck model and performs equally well with high gain and vintage amps.

Good pickup, but not perfect

Comments OK, so I'm using this pickup on my neck through Ibanez RG (mahogany body, maple wings, rosewood board). This is my 4th bridge pickup since I bought the guitar. I had a Duncan sh-12, original EVO, Duncan designed hb112 and then this.
The amp is Blackstar ht-5 10" combo with boss sd-1 as booster.
First off, this pickup really do what Dimarzio said it'd do, it clean up very well (orig EVO can't clean up at all) which makes the evo2 more useable in live situation. And the sometimes painful treble of EVO is smoothed out while still sound in-your-face.
Now, although this is based on dp159, I feel this pickup is vastly different in some ways.
This pickup has better sustain&harmonics IMO compared to dp159 which has plenty of them already.
When I first plug the guitar, I notice the pick response is less quick and more sluggish. This pickup has way plenty more bass..! It is like when you play the dp159 and turn down tone knob by 20-30%. This pickup is much more meaty than the orig. Evo..
The difference is so radical that I had to ditch my ts9 in favor of the tighter boss sd-1.. Using the ts9 the sound becomes too muddy.. And the honky mids does not help at all..
Also, I have to cut my amp bass setting from 1 to 10 o clock to make this pickup sound tight enough.. If I only have the ts9 I surely will hate this pickup..

Liked about it 1. Best lead tone from all the pickups I tried/own
2. It clean up very well, unlike the dp159
3. Good clean, awesome twangy sound when split with my blue velvet middle

Didn't like 1. Sound slightly muddy If I not careful with my gear settings
2. If the evo stings, than this pickup has tendency to do "twang", which sound a bit weird when you do metal riffs.

Great pickup, but perhaps I've put it in the wrong guitar!

Comments Evo 2 - Vai - there's a great start. Yes its a great pickup, but like all pickups I think it suits certain guitars better. I bought an Evo 2 to replace a Inf Bridge pickup in an RGT42. Yes its miles better then the Infinity - but there's not the huge jump in difference I saw when I replace the crap stock pickups in a Washburn with a Super Distortion. Perhaps the Infinity's weren't so bad as the stock in the Washy, but I think in this guitar the pickup doesn't really sing as it should. I'm going to put a V2 in the RGT and try the Evo2 in an ESP which has seriously bad pickups in.

That's not to say its not a great pickup - it is. Great tone, clear - but in this guitar I'm not sold on it. I think it seems to lack oomph compared to the Super Distortion, but pickups and tone are such a personal thing its probably hard to be totally objective with them. I'd certainly buy one again, but I would be aware of this.

Liked about it 1) Very clear
2) quite nice tone

Didn't like 1) in this guitar it seems a bit - personality-less. But that may well be the fact its not suited to it. So I'm not going to mark it down, or mark it up...

DP215 Evo 2 humbucker

Comments I replaced a X2N in my RG550 by an EVO2. Perfect fit for me! I like it, not the Steve Vai tone but I found my tone. I can't stand not playing with it!

Liked about it Versatile, punchy, fits with several different neck pups: was in couple with a DP150 double whammy for years and now a paf joe
Clean tone is very cool too, but I mainly used the middle and/or the neck pups in clean tone.

Didn't like Cleans are depending on your ears a bit sparkling...
Maybe lacks a bit to go out of the mix, but I personally switches to the neck pickup (a paf joe) to go out of the mix and it works perfectly!!!

A great pickup that dishes out sweet tone.

Comments I love it when Dimarzio offers something new. I'm a Dimarzio man, and couldn't wait to check out the EVO 2. I installed this in an Ibanez RG-570, and typically run it through an Ibanez Jemini and into a Carvin Legacy. If you are looking to replicate Steve Vai's tone, then you need to start with this pickup.

Liked about it It is hot enough to satisfy the hard rockers out there. This pickups has a nice low end and mid range. It also has some sweet glistening highs. I really like how this pickup cleans up when the guitar's volume knob is rolled back. I almost, yes--almost, like this EVO 2 as much as the Tone Zone--almost.

Didn't like There is nothing I don't like about it. As with all Dimarzio pickups, there is a nice selection of custom colors--but maybe they could offer a few more. Orange...
