While I don't currently own a Strat, I do have friends who do. I have this particular friend who owns a Mexi Strat which he outfitted with noiseless DiMarzios including the Area and Virtual Vintage series pickups. Needless to say I was stunned. The previous Mexi pickups in the guitar were really bad in comparison to these new pups, which by contrast had immense clarity, bite and chime, and exceptional mid focus and low end beef.
Comparably, my Area 58 so far has been amazing for me. Cleans are immaculate especially when split with either the bridge (Breed Bridge) or neck (Air Norton) pickups. It provides genuine Strat tonality without needing to have an actual Strat. Sure, it's low output, but I believe this helps tremendously with my cleans. I even get cool split coil dirt tones from this. What's cooler is that I could go total Liverpool on this mid pickup alone when used with the right amp.
Overall, after understanding the purpose and limitations of this pickup I believe I have not been mistaken in choosing this pup for the middle position. If ever, I'd probably get the Heavy Blues next, but for the meantime this pup rocks me just fine.

1. Sounds great by itself
2. Sounds great when combined with the other pickups
3. Really noiseless, when they say it's much quieter than standard humbuckers, they weren't kidding

I would have probably wanted to have the option of adjustable polepieces, since it gets in the way of my picking. One more thing I would have wanted it to have is a bit more output to reduce the volume drop when switching pickups, but that would certainly ruin the magic of the great-sounding lower gain positions.
