O.k. to start with, if you have line 6 rifftracker it comes with gearbox silver for free, and it is really good .But you are missing out on so many tones without the gold version. It has a whole world more stomp boxes ,amp models, and effects, and you get the entire Pod xt memory bank ,which is awesome.I found myself getting bored with music because of the tone i was looking for just wasn't there. I had so many nice guitars and amps but couldn't put my finger on what i wanted due to money limiations. Then i was hit right in the face when i found this . I played with it for days and then i started finding the tone i was looking for day by day ,now even my low end guitars shine .And i was always thinking it was the guitar i needed, the magic 10,000 dollar guitars and amps.
I was wrong.I found one particular tone and i use it so much it is kinda my signature tone .And you might be thinking o.k you got great tone but youll never use it live, wrong!!! With the Pod x3 live, i can transfer tones back and forth between them , to record and play live, and they sound amazing. True stereo brother.Anyway i found myself loving music again and finding (artsit tones) helped me alot. It seems like i can play better now just from the tone i get it.IT makes the guitar play better. I guess i hear it better now and it's not just noise. I can get from Steve Vai , Metallica, to Steve Ray Vaugn in 3 seconds lol.
Check out the sound file. I just did some random tones to give you an idea on what it can do out of the box. One thing to be very careful of is i bought the Guitar Port Rifftracker first ,and then i bought the GTearbox Gold Bundle, big mistake because you have to use the Toneport that came with the Gearb Box Gold to have the acceas to the gold bundle. So i sold it and just downloaded it from Line6.com ,which i should have done first. But if all you want is the plug in for Protools or something, you can just get the Gearbox Gold Bundle in the box.

I love the tone. It let me have so many effects, a football field would be required to store them, and would probably lose signal half way through the chain lol. I mean so many stomp boxes, amp models ,and so on.
Another thing is it's not just for guitar, it's for bass and vocals too .I know people think virtual amps are no good, but they are wrong. This is amazing tone and suprisingly not muddy or anything. You can use it with so many programs.
I only use Gearbox Gold with my Rifftracker, which comes with Riffworks, the recording program which is super easy to use.
I would recommend this to anyone who wants a small studio, and wants to have great tone ,and not get poor or divorced in the process. It inspires me all the time to just write songs, because the tone is there, and i am not constanly looking for tone. Just put up Riffworks, open up Gearbox, put some drums on, and rock. That easy.
Some of the songs i write are in a matter of minutes,i mean like 30 minutes lol. I can record riffs, to find them later and add to them. Without this Gearbox Gold Plug in, i would still be looking for good tone, buying amps, mics ,foot pedals ,and getting rid of great guitars, thinking its their fault.

As i stated before, don't buy the box version if you have Rifftracker .Just download it form Line 6.com,which it wasn't even Line 6's fault. It warns you ,i just didn't see it till after the booboo. The box version doesn't have the easy hookups to the sound card like my Guitar Port, so thats why i wanted to keep the Guitar Port but use the Gearbox Gold Version ,which is only possible if you download it, because the box version has the plugin built in it.
I so wish it had the new whammy effect, like the spider 4 amp,you know, the octave thing with the pedal. I want a whammy so bad ,they got the technology now but its probably too late for them to add it to the Pod x3, or the Guitar Port . Line 6, if you read this let us know if it is possible. I'm sure it would be worth like $20.00 just for the download. And with the x3 make it so the pedal controls it . That would be very cool and very usefull.
