Hello. I just picked up a MIJ 1994 RG550 Blk. Glad I found this site. Had an Ibanez RG back in 90. I picked up one of the AR200 artist a few years back upgraded the pickups to a duncan jazz neck and a Jb in the bridge. Amazing what good pickups can do for the right cut of wood. I love it. Wanted a total shredder so I researched and found this very cheaply priced jewel on line. I am excited. The neck is like new and outside of a few minor dings this guitar loks like it did a lot of case time. No buckle rash either. I do have issues though.

-The Hums are moving up and down on the screws. They dont come off just move up and down.

- The tremolo angle adjustment screws seem to be at an obscenley uneven depth of inserstion to get the angle right ( maybe?)

- Neck looks straight but messed with the trem slightly last night to get rid of the slight buzzing on the low E and A strings.

-The guitar's body is in such good shape that the few tiny dings actually bug me. I'ts black so I'm hoping to post to find someone hear that can provide info on making them disappear as best as possible.

- Been spending some time looking into pickups and I'm thinking I would like air norton neck-area 61 middle-evo 2 bridge. Still much research to do with compatability with each other and tone. I do want to move fast with this though as I'm seething at the bit here.

These things I will probably address in individual posts. But I guess if it's not frowned upon please feel free to comment on this thread or let me know that members like individual threads. I think after 25 years I may finally be an Ibanez guy after all. I LOVE the feel and playability. I think the RG will compliment the mahogoney set neck artist very well and provide a completley different look, feel and tone in the end which is what I was aiming for. Kinda cool to get that with one maker. I am contemplating buying the pickups and having a pro set it up as I have no experience tinkering with floaters and want to shred this guitar so bad quickly.

It was a night of progressive metal madness, and the PGM served me well...I ran my 5150 through an Orange 4x12 that night. Still pretty brutal sounding - definitely on par with my usual PRS/Mesa combination.
P.S. for all the Sonic Youth fans - that shirt is a not a reprint! 1987 son!

Took it home and took it apart, cleaned the pots and switches and viola sound!!!! Did a pretty thorough cleaning and added some new knobs and switch plate and for a grand total of 94.00 I have a pretty nice looking and playing guitar. I don't have a Les Paul to compare it against so I don't know the difference but it sounds pretty darn good. Especially through a clean channel. Plays nicely and it looks cool on the wall if nothing else.

Anyway the first 3 photos are before and the last 4 are after some cleaning.
So the guitar has been unused for 14.5 years or so. It has spent it's life in the case and is in mint condition. I have moved several times and just tired of bringing it along. Takes up space and I want a new axe.....so my question is...

What is the going rate on these things? Is it worth me selling or should I just keep it? I know I don't have much info on it here, I'm just looking for averages that you know of or have seeen.
Any info is appreciated. Thanks.....

Here's something that's about 17 years in the making. I got this wood 17 years ago and glued it together into a blank. Then about 6 years ago I carved it into a Radius shape, a composite of all of my favorite aspects of the different shape migrations from 1987 through 1993. Then I stained it dark brown, thinking I would sand it back and go with an antique violin kind of thing, then I stripped it back to the point where there was just a little brown in the flames, and then a friend of mine came up with this color after I picked the two colors of the burst. It looks different in person. When the guitar is done I'll take pics outside. These are all low light pics with and without flash.

For the bridge, I thought I'd pay homage to the Radius shape by carving a "mini radius" to scale out of this Figured Walnut. I recessed these Steinberger style saddles into the wood (I'll add a metal bottom plate) and then I drilled and threaded the Walnut bridge for allen screws that lock the saddles into place, just like a Steinberger bridge. If I don't like it once it's all together I'll just replace it with a more sculpted piece that is NOT shaped like a Radius, but rather more like G&L's hardtail ASAT and Bass bridges.

The neck is solid Brazillian, with the skunk stripe made from the same piece of wood.

Can't decide between zebra pickups, cream P-Rails, or black at this time. I'll wait until it's all put together but I'm open to suggestions. Here's the rest of the pics: http://s476.photobucket.com/albums/r...ius%20project/

This guitar began life as a 1991 540-R with the sharkfin inlays and H-S-H pickups. When I bought it on the auction site last year it was fairly ragged out, but I really wanted a Radius body. Lots of dings and scratches in the paint. Hardware and neck in reasonably good condition. I’m not a fan of the sharkfins, so I always considered replacing the neck. Once I decided what to do I sought out a chrome Edge (thanks evolvedmb) and picked up matching chrome Gotoh tuners.

This guitar represents the merging of some of my vices … guitar (my 2 favorite players are EVH and Satriani – Radius close enough to a JS in my mind) and my favorite sports teams, the University of Florida Gators (also my alma mater).

I couldn’t have pulled off the paint job, but luckily I know someone who has the skill and knowledge (doesn’t hurt that he too likes Van Halen and the Gators). He stripped it down, filled the pickup cavities, pickup selector slot and tone knob, and did all of the magic with the paint and the decals for the headstock.

So here it is, the “UF5150” guitar …

•	Musikraft Custom Banana headstock (compound radius, medium jumbo frets, medium C shape): It’s a little thicker than an Ibanez neck, but that’s been my preference the last 7 or 8 years.
•	Seymour Duncan "Custom 8" pickup (Custom Custom with Alnico 8 magnet): I made a conscious decision to try a Duncan for this guitar, since those were Eddie’s pickups. It came down to 3 different ones I wanted to try, but I didn’t want to spend the $160 for a SD Custom Shop. So I bought a few used on the SD forum, and really like this Custom 8.
•	Push-Pull knob to switch between series and parallel
•	Cheap orange knob that turned out to match the paint perfectly
•	I have access to a lasermarking machine, so I couldn’t resist giving this a serial #

Hi everyone,

Im a intermediate guitar player that plays very often. Im 16 so 'studies come first' and all but I am just so passionate about guitar. Ive been playing for over two years now. Ive owned a very bad guitar, very bad, for this whole time, and ive been saving up to buy a nice guitar. I love PRS guitars, but my favourites are the Ibanez guitars, Jem, Herman Li's, Paul Gilbert's. My budjet is about 1000$ but I want to get a guitar at 800$ or less so that I can get some more pedals. I play jazz, blues, rock, hard rock, metal ( a lot of Led Zep, Steve Vai, Rolling Stones, Queen, Static X ) and so I need a pretty versatile guitar.
I considered the Jem7v but its way out of my budjet and even used ( i had seen a couple running on ****/ craigslist ) for 1400-1600$ i cant/couldnt afford it. So I considered buying the Jem 555, I haven't tried it yet and I am hoping I can find it used for around 600-900$ ( i have already seen sold on **** a jem555 at 680$ and the buyer left a comment saying that it was real etc..) The thing is everyone is saying that it sucks. I mean it has edge pro 2 or 3 and evo pickups and im pretty sure the neck dimensions are almost identical to the 7v. And i have read many go reviews about this guitar, and the only bad ones were talking customer service, or how ugly it is compared to the 'real' Jems, or that it wasnt setup correctly when they bought it...

anyway what I would like to know is if the Jem 555 is not the way to go, then what do i do? What guitar is very versatile and plays well ( has to have a trem, not necesarily floating and humbuckers, preferably H/S/H) and especially, is the Jem 555 that bad?

Thanks in advanst,
Nick,

hey guys, first post here. just thought i should share this crazy project i have been workin on for a few weeks. found this Rg550 MIJ at a used guitar store for $150. Mostly everything was there but whoever had it primered and spray painted it this ugly flat maroon color complete with a black horse/dragon stenciled on the front lol. but seeing the bright yellow shining through i thought i'd give it my best to save the desert yellow. using 60, 200, and 400 grit sandpaper i slowly got it down to the yellow. It wasn't perfect, but trying to get all the primer off, i was taking more yellow off then primer. So i decided to stop and clear coat it. I used krylon clear to spray 10 thin coats. Used some buffing compound to fill in the tiny scratches, and try to bring the shine out. It looks pretty, good, just not a mirror like shine on this one. But at least it's protected. Threw it back together, and just trying to set it up as best i can. THinkiing about throwing either some caparison pickups in it or wolfgang pickups since the stock pickups are shot, and the dimarzio it came with is not F-spaced. any ideas? Just wanted to say thanks for all the info and great posts. Keep it coming.

How do I make the pickguard smooth again. Got scratches everywhere and I want to get rid of it. What do I need to use to make the surface smooth again. And to finish it, what the best way to use to add some color onto it. Spraypaint? Any Ideas are welcome... Thank You

Putting aside the lowest of the low end, lets assume the first "real" Ibanez is the RG3XX series. Then you have RG4XX and then...Prestige! While the price difference between the upper end MIK/MII and the lower end Prestige isn't all that great, the way they are marketed suggests that the improvement in quality is huge for that extra $100-$200.

Maybe its silly care since you could always just pay the extra cash for a 1550 if you want a MIJ, but where did the mid-range MIJ ones go? TBH, after playing an upper-end MIK and an older MIJ Ibanez (non-prestige), nothing jumped out at me as being particularly higher quality about the MIJ, besides the MIJ not having an Edge III. It seems like Ibanez took their "regular" guitars that were previously MIJ and just started making them in Korea and Indonesia. The problem with that is it makes their "Prestige" line seem, well, less prestigious! (Did regular MIJ models ever coexist with Prestige models?)

On top of this, it seems even more strange when you look at Jackson, who produces all their mid-ranged models in Japan! I've played a few and again, they seem to be about on par with the MIK Ibanez and older MIJs. Good quality for the money, but nothing spectacular.

It really shouldn't matter where a guitar is made...but try to tell that to guitarists. We seem to care deeply about this. What's so different about Ibanez that prevents them from making mid-range models in Japan as well as the high-end ones vs. Jackson? Is the factory making current Prestige models the same that made the older MIJs?

WRONG...I think the EVO is lifeless. so now i got someone that wants to trade me an EMG85 for it. Has anyone crossed the passive/active barrier. CAN you run both?

PS because i love the super shred sound of series TZ im gonna add a switch so i can get bot....still no coil tapping though
