:?: A fantastic player I know has a very expensive hand made one off classical and his suggestion to me with my $1,000.00 Classical (POS compared to his) is to leave it in the bathroom when showering as the steam keeps it humidified. He says he's been doing this for over 20 years and has never had a problem with his guitar. Has anyone else heard of this? Right now I'm just using the humidifier case component with the little sponges. For the last week I have kept it in the spare bathroom where my son and I take our showers (separately of course!). But is this too much humidity for the guitar or what? I have no reason to doubt the guy, as I have known him since we were kids, and he has attended San Francisco Conservatory, as well as other prestigious schools. His playing ability is phenomenal, though I am a little curious if anyone has ever heard of this? :?:

Thanks for any feedback...

This is a post from another forum but it could apply to all of us one day so it's worth the read.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Imagine my horror when my wife called me to say that the guitar had arrived from FedEx Ground, and she asked.....why it did not come in a box !!

Yes, I did a trade with a guy (Andrew Emmel) and after careful preparation (lots of picture trading, many emails, talking on phone, etc) ..... I never thought to ask him if he would be putting this in a BOX for shipment. Some things I guess you just cannot assume. I was speechless, I mean who would send a $1500 guitar out to the FedEx gorilla gang with no protection other than the nice Gibson USA (mint condition when it started) hardshell case. This great case, which my traded decided to use as the shipping box....without telling me.....is part of the value of the trade. I don't even ship pedals in their boxes, I always double box them....to protect the value. And this guy sends a CASE out into the great unknown. Did I mention I was floored. Oh and by the way, this is a guitar that is well known for broken necks too right? Not even any internal padding to be sure it did not move around inside.
Just packing tape all around the outside to be sure and leave sticky un-removable residue all over the case....just to provide a continuous reminder of my bonehead shipper trading pal. Oh the horror. I was on a trip at the time so I got to wait 4 days until I got to see it with my own eyes.

So here is the "shipping box":

I can only assume that the owner wanted to start the relic'ing process of the case for me while it was in transit to me.

The good news is that it was not destroyed, the case had lots of new wear and tear courtesy of FedEx handlers and some pretty good crunches (in places that you wonder how they did it). But no broken neck. This must be a testament to the form/fit of this Gibson case as it did it's job well.

There is a darker side of the story (what was described as "deglossing of the back of neck by his guitar tech" seemed to be much more "hand some course sandpaper to your 6 year old and let them have it". It is brutal and unplayable neck that needs professional attention. I have an estimate for $150 to repair that surprise.....but that is another story for another thread.

Lesson learned #142:
Always confirm that seller/trader plans to put your item in a box and properly pack it.

Lesson learned #143:
Ones persons "deglossing to match the feel of his Taylor 314ce neck" is another persons "scraped with sawblade"

Lesson learned #144:
When you think that 10 pictures have told the entire story....ask for some more.

Lesson learned #145:
Even though you would always want to make a trade deal right in order to be fair and protect your reputation, don't assume others will do the same.

That is all for now. By the way I am not seeking any "oh that sucks.....I live near him and could pay him a visit" 30 page thread here. I just had to share my first bad trading experience in a long time....and vent a bit. I did not even encounter him here on TGP, but I know you guys would understand my horror. I now forgive him and wish him the best and hope that he enjoyed getting the better end of this trade deal.

The guy who traded me is: Andrew Emmel (username is: andrewemmel on Acoustic Guitar Forum and Ultimate Guitar forum). I don't see him on TGP, but wanted you guys to know so if you do deal with him....you can exercise GREAT caution. To be fair, he did not totally rip me off as he sent the guitar in trade, but his packaging was NON-EXISTENT which diminished the value of the case and the neck sanding destroyed the value that I attached to the guitar and he did NOTHING to try and reach happy compromise on making right on things.

What makes it cool is that it's sort of famous. It's one of 4 "top-favored" guitars of a well-known guitar virtuoso and it's toured and been played all over the world. I have cool documentation stuff from "the owner" that came with it, and it's been featured in Vintage Guitar magazine.
It's the one on the far right:
Thought I'd share with my Jem-Brethern.

I want to get myself a new guitar for no other reason than I want a new one. Just a regular GAS attack I guess. Is there a production guitar out there that has the following specs? I'd prefer not to have to pay the price of a custom instrument, especially because I don't even know if you can get such a thing here on the southern tip of Africa :)

Specs:
-Explorer body shape
-Active pickups (SD or EMG, doesn't matter)
-OFR
-24 Fret neck
-Electronics: 1 vol, 1 tone, 3-way swich

An ebony board with no inlays would be a plus, but I know I'd be pushing my luck adding that to the list :) Maybe warmoth is the only way to go here?

Does anybody any ideas or opinions? Is this a futile quest?

After quite a bit of research, help from the EBMM Customer Service, and lots of e-mail traffic, I stumbled upon "the one".

A truss rod tweak, some trem adjustments, and a 45-degree turn of the pickup selector after, I can't stop grinning. It's quite a different beast than my Ibby RG or Sabers, but that's what I wanted in the stable - a no-nonsense rock axe with character.
Ok, let's quit the babbling. May I introduce my California Queen - Ernie Ball/Music Man Axis quilt Pacific Blueburst:

Just got a new Jackson Dinky DK2S from an online dealer, with "JT580 LP" bridge. It seems like a decent guitar (and the Sustainiac is a blast- main reason I got it). But the linkage between the trem arm and the bridge is sloppy, no matter how hard I try to tighten the finger-nut which holds the bar into the bridge. I was hoping it would be as tight as the OFR on a 20+ year old guitar I have, but instead it's almost as sloppy as the screw-in bar in my Strat. No good for the Vai-type flutter effects, etc. This was a "floor" model and came with no manual or tools. I see an Allen screw head opposite the bar under the bridge plate (after taking off trem cavity cover on the back), but it is tight.

Any suggested modifications or upgrades to tighten this thing up?

I searched on here and elsewhere and didn't see any similar complaints, so maybe I should just send it back while I still can and try another?

Thanks in advance!

Simply put, after reading here for a long time, I've realised something. Whenever we make a reccomendation thread, we all make a huge mistake. We ask for 'more of this' or 'less of that' without going into enough detail on what we WANT and need out of a guitar.

So in this thread, I invite everyone to think, seriously, about what their guitar needs to do for them and what their guitars currently don't do.

Heres a beginning we can all reference when we ask for help on things.

Mine:

1 - "Direct" feeling in the instrument.
I want 7 strings, because they sound huge, but I want an immediate physical connection to the string. A flabby string for me is the same as a thin pick, I just can't get on with it, it feels like I'm always waiting for it to let me play the note. In comparison, my acoustic 6 string, tuned to standard, has almost exactly what I want here. An immediate attack with no trace of sluggishness to the sound, that responds immediately WITHOUT losing any bass response and without sounding muddy.

This is a problem lots of 6 strings have too. I don't know why it is, but for some reason I just can't get on with the lower strings on most guitars. Those are the strings I want to have the most immediate attack, the most direct connection (When I want it, but its easier to make a soft sound via playing style than it is a hard one), but they ALWAYS dissapoint and make me think 'Thats flabby'

On a lot of guitars though, I have the opposite problem with the HIGH strings. They're SHRILL and harsh, they don't have that pleasant, rounded 'singing' quality to them that I want. The pick attack comes out too much on fast runs and clicks and clacks horribly, when I want a fluid run with defined attacks, where the sustain rings with a warm roundness to it, it comes out as either sloppy mush with the desired sustain, or a clacky mess with shrill sustain!

2 - SUSTAIN - WHats wrong with me? Am I asking for too much? Maybe its because I don't own a neckthrough, but why do guitars seem to be built to hinder sustain? Gaps between the neck pockets and the neck, bolts that just don't provied enough clamping force, bridges that are put together merely to function and not to feel like a cohesive unit, so much so in fact, that every bridge I've ever played has a fault that ruins it for me. (Continued next point)

On top of this, pickups that move uncomfortably and produce feeback at high volumes, tremolo springs where TO THIS DAY no manufacturer makes a solution to the spring ringing problem that plagues all tremolo bridges. This also contributes muddiness to the tone like you wouldn't believe. A sloppy sounding guitar can be tightened up considerably by rolling pieces of paper into the springs and damping them that way, why does no manufacturer or company make something to fix this PROPERLY? a half assed fix like that isn't something I want to have to do to all my guitars.

Pots that aren't mounted to plates bug me too. I want a guitar made where EVERY possible part is mounted either with woodworking techniques or with machine screws going into inserts on the guitar body. I want a guitar where stripping a screw is never a problem because the screw goes into an insert capable of handling the pressure. Wood screws are not an effective way of fixing things to other things.

The above point also concerns tuners, bolts, everything that isnt wood to wood. Especially bridges! I want every adjustable part of a bridge to be made to fine tolerances, and wherever posible, to have seperate adjustment and locking. Adjust the part, LOCK the part in place.

3 - BRIDGES

Fender bridges - "String tension will hold the saddle down, no problem." - **** YOU, I want my saddle to lock down into place and stay there as tight as possible. I want machine bolts to do that for maximum pressure, making the saddle feel like its merely a part of the baseplate that happens to be adjustable.

Floyd Rose Bridges - Suffering from the above also. Sure the saddle locks, but the whole bridge assembly on any type of floyd FEELS like a conglomeration of parts, rather than a single unit. When I pick up a bridge, I want it to feel like a single piece of metal with movable parts integrated into it, not like this! The main culprit in this case though tends to be inexact threads. Everyone has at least once in their lives I'm sure, picked up something with a screw in it and when tightening it realised the screw thread has no play in it at all and moves smoothly. Bridges just dont get that, we get screws that wobble in the threads and turn with a vague resistance, meaning tolerances just aren't tight enough! Or that if they WERE, the metal is too soft and has WORN!

Another particular problem is tremolo arms. fender type arms don't have enough bend so they bottom out early. Floyd type arms rely on a washer, rather than a proper system, so the arm has a whole crapton of play in it unless you tighten that washer down all the way. I want a solid, well made thread, screwing into SOLID METAL the whole way down, preferably into the tremolo block itself if at all possible so that the arm has a direct connection with the bridge.

Fixed Bridges - General user unfriendlyness and a stubborn refusal to change. I've never played a tonepros bridge, but why did it take so long for someone to lock the parts together like that? LAZINESS! And WHY are the intonation adjustments on TOM bridges in such a bastard place to get to? Argh!

4 - Frets - **** YOU NICKEL SILVER. You tarnish, you wear, you come from the factory with high and low spots then my local luthier fixes you and you STILL fret out on big bends because your radius is ****ed. Stainless steel PLEASE. OH WAIT, **** YOU INDUSTRY, YOU WONT GIVE US THAT BECAUSE ITS TOO EXPENSIVE.

5 - Necks and Neck Pockets OK, screw this for a lark. I do NOT want a shim in my neck pocket. What I WANT is a neck that FITS CORRECTLY. So many people on here post their awesome NGDs and I can see that their guitars have shims, or that the neck has just a tiny bit of play in the pocket from side to side.

Also, I WANT A VOLUTE in my necks. Why? More mass, less headstock vibration to lose energy in the tuners and make the strings ring behind the nut. They're only going to do that if I hit them, in my perfect world.

6 - Shielding This one really gets on my nerves. ALL my guitars buzz when hear electrical equipment. Why? Because they aren't ****ing shielded properly. They have HUMBUCKERS for godsakes. They shouldn't buzz at all, yet buzz they do! (This is also partially to do with unequal windings on the coils. What a RETARDED idea, THANKS dimarzio.) This is even worse on FR equipped guitars, or ZR guitars. The ZR trem has a massive metal plate in the back, which is grounded but not shielded and doesn't act as shielding. Buzz gets into it like a mother****er! And not a trace of copper to be found anywhere in the shielding of any guitar I've ever owned! Conductive paint isn't worth **** either, its useless and theres only ever one coat of it anyway.

I have a whole crapload more pet peeves, but here we go.

Hi All,

I have a PRS Standard 24, all mahogany--neck through, 3 way toggle/push-pull tone with factory PUs. The ones in there are OK--and they've done the job pretty decent for the last 7-8 years I've owned the guitar.

Lately, I'm thinking of replacing the stock pu's with a Dimarzio Steve's Special in the bridge and a Dimarzio Air Norton in the neck. How do yall think this would sound in the PRS? I use a Mesa Single Rectifier Solo 50 with a Marshall 4x12 loaded with GT12-75s ( nice and broken in too! ).

I'm thinking the PUs will take the tone up a notch quite a bit. Let me know what you all think about this change. And lastly, what color PU's would look nice in a creme PRS? Thanks greatly in advance.

Best,
