Hey All,

I've got an American Deluxe Fat Strat and after hating the stock pickups for 10 years, I'm finally going to replace them. I've settled on a PAF 36th Anniversary for the Bridge, and a pair of Cruisers for Neck and Middle.

The Dimarzio tech recommended 250K pots across the board for volume and both tone controls. It is a relatively bright guitar and I do prefer my tone slightly warm. Does this sound right? I always fingured the conventional wisdom was 500K for humbuckers, and the Cruisers (while single coil replacements) are essentially hum-cancelling also.

Do you guys have experience with any of these pickups? Which pots worked for you? Thanks.

I have a RG2EX1 Guitar i just recently bought. I specially love the neck on the guitar which is why I picked this one. I know it is on the lower priced end of the Ibanez Models. I plan on doing some extensive hardware modification to it, which is also why I purchased the lower priced one.

But the problem is that the STOCK 5 way switch makes a loud cracking and popping noise every time I switch between any of the pickups. Any of the combinations it makes the noise.

I sprayed the switch with good contact cleaner as I use on ALL my guitars and all the pots in my rack mount gear. But that doesnt help! It has been like this from day one. And I thought it would something simple to fix aside from putting in a new switch.

But I like to get this switch problem fixed first before I do amy other modifications to this guitar! Does anyone have any ideas what could be the problem with this? Has anyone else experienced problems like thisl with a stock guitar?! And how did you fix it?! Thanx in advance!

Hey guys, I've been GAS'ing for a sustainer for awhile, it isn't necessarily at the top of my list but I wanted to ask, do you guys generally use the pots provided with the kit from fernandes. Also where do you get the dummy pickup that sits beside it. I have been thinknig about just going for a sustainiac system also and I believe for a humbucker it comes with the dummy and for extra moola they'll install it for me.

Also does the sustainiac come with pots? I need a volume pot so I figure a sustainer with pots would cover my bases haha. I believe I've posted questions about the sustainer but I'm mainly thinking about the actual electronics other than the circuit board and driver and if I should use them.

Thanks,

I've installed a PAF Pro in the bridge position of my RG550, and I'm loving the tone of it, but problem is I'm too used to the output from hotter pickups.

My other guitars have EMGs and Mighty Mite Motherbuckers, which are real high output pickups. When I use these guitars through my Blackstar HT-5 they really push the dirty channel, and I get great distortion.

The PAF Pro is a bit weaker than the other pickups I have, and I need to turn the gain up completely, although it still doesn't quite reach the sort of gain I get from the other guitars at 3/4 gain.

I was looking at the Black Ice mod, but I think that's not really a solution, as I want a clean boost. Another option I have thought of is the EMG Afterburner, but is there another option I can do similar to the Black Ice mod maybe? I'm happy to change my tone knob to a "boost" knob so to speak, I don't really use the tone anyway.

Thanks in advance.

Hi guys, I've been a looooong time Lurker, and I really need your guys help on this one, this is driving me crazy.

I have two nearly Identical guitars with pickup configurations. My RG550 and my PGM301.

My Rg550 is completely stock. The wiring is exactly how Ibanez has wired it.

My PGM301 has a Dimarzio Tone Zone in the neck and bridge, and the stock Ibanez/Dimarzio ISCV1 "Jem" Single Coil. I have used an Allparts/Dimarzio switch and have wired it completely correct as to this wiring diagram.

http://www.dimarzio.com//media/diagrams/C.pdf

Here lies my problem.

please listen to my Clip. I'm cycling through the pickup positions on each guitar, starting with the bridge going to the neck, then back to the bridge. The first guitar is the RG550 and the second is the PGM.

SoundClick artist: Explosivo - A rag tag bunch of hooligans and flim flams

The difference in output in positions 2 and 4 (middle and neck/middle and bridge ) on the PGM compared to the humbuckers in position 1 and 5 is huge! And when comparing the output in positions 2 and 4 with my RG550 and a Jem with Dimarzio Evolutions (which are even higher output than the Tone Zones ) and a Jem single coil (same as the PGM ) there is far less of a output difference.

Now I realise that the Tone Zones are quite high output, which would be understandable that the output difference to the single coil would be much different, but I've tested this problem against a Jem with similar pickups and there isn't a volume loss as substantial like this PGM.

Could anyone shed some light on this one? Perhaps one of you with a stock PGM or Tone Zones could tell me if their's sounds like that? Am I wrong and should there be such a volume difference? At this point the volume drop is so severe that using the 2 and 4 positions is totally impossible as the volume is so different.

Thank you so much in advance, I'm not a tard, I swear!

I'm set on the Air Norton in the neck because I love the way the AN7 sounds in my RG1527, but for the bridge I'm not 100% decided...maybe Tone Zone? For the single coil, I don't have a clue...I'd like something fairly hot so there's not so much of a volume drop.

Im thinking a D-sonic. Maybe even an X2N. I dunno, the maple neck is sweet supreme, but is definitely lacking in the heaviness department when mated with my Mesa. Shred city for sure, but not the Petrucci-esque tone im used to with my PRS.

Suggestions, oh wise ones?

I've just installed the green PAF Pro that I got off Homebake today. It's apparently out of a JEM (green pickup). We've assumed that it's a bridge one as the wiring on it was quite short, and there is an "F" printed on the back, along with V 1, and the Made in the USA DiMarzio bit.

The wires were grouped as a white/black, Green/Black, and Red.

I installed it in my RG550 20th Ann guitar. I connected the red to the same point as the red wire on the pickup selector, the white/black combo to the white wire on the pickup selector, and the green/black to the pot.

Now the pickup is functioning and everything, I just want to make sure the wires are comboed together in the right order for regular series wiring. Also, I'm not sure if I've physically installed the humbucker the right way around. The writing on the DiMarzio is upside down compared to the V series the guitar came with. By that I mean the writing is up the right way if the headstock is pointing to the ground, and the Ibanez labels are the right way up if the neck is pointing up.

I hope I've made sense and thanks in advance for your replies. :)
