Re: My dad was told he has one year to live in which he will starve to death :-(
My condolences to you. I recently lost my Grandfather a month ago after a hell of a battle that took quite some time. He was a great man, one of those quiet achievers who went out of his way to help others when he could, sounds like your Father was one of those people too.
Good luck and hopefully things will not be too hard. We were sort of glad when my Grandfather passed away as he went through a tonne of pain for so long, but his death was nice and calm. He actually looked relaxed for the first time in many months. He did not want to give up but finally it overcame him and he accepted it I guess.
My thoughts go out to you and I hope you will get through and remember the good times, and how great he was.

I don't even know how I'd react to that type of news.
I think as was said already, enjoy the time you've had and will have.
it sounds like you have a good relationship with your Dad and you have that to be thankful for. Do what you can to help keep him comfortable, and make sure your kids have a chance to get to know him. Those memories will last them their whole lives. You have my families best wishes.

I'm very sorry to hear about all of this. Dealing with our parents' mortality is perhaps the hardest thing we're forced to do in life.
Without a doubt, I've observed those personality traits in you during our discussions over the last several years. If anything can lighten your emotional load even a bit, maybe it would help you to know that you can do much to preserve his legacy. My grandfather died before I reached 5th grade, but I have strong memories of the man he was. My parents have made sure that I know who he was and what he meant to them and to me before I even knew his face.
All the best,
Chris

Glen,
Although I am new to this site and don't know you, I could feel your pain coming through your typed words and I was so sad for you. I am so very, very sorry for you and your family.

Thanks everyone for your kind words of support, they are much appreciated.
I wanted to post an update as unfortunately the situation hastened and has taken a turn for the worse. My dad has been in and out of hospital a few times since i posted this thread, the latest being this weekend where he remains. Unfortunately CT scans have shown that his malignancy is "very aggressive" and spread into the liver in a few weeks. He's comfortable & mostly stabilized and they're hoping to release him home maybe this weekend where barring a miracle he'll have a short time remaining

Wow, it's amazing how fast these things can happen...
I feel like you're situation mirrors exactly what I just went through a few months ago.

We were on the living room, and my father went jogging. He had a blood tension or hypertension "donīt know which one of these is correct in english" and the jogging made his heart beat too fast. He collapsed in the living room with a fatal heart attack. I guess the expression "Dropped dead" fits, that was very much what happened. I was very close to my dad, he really suported my idea of wanting to become a professional musician and suported me financially and lovingly. One day he was here and the next he wasnīt anymore. I didnīt get to say goodbye, or spend time with him if he had any serious diseases. The only thing i regret is not spending more time with my father due to selfishness playing video games and not wanting to go visit the museum with him and my mom. Or go out and do activities together. Itīs something il regret until i die and meet him wherever we may go after we leave this world and ask him to forgive me for that.
My only advice for you Glen is that you spend as much time with your father as you can. You know that in his fragile state he may pass away at any moment. So spend as many times with him as you can, look at old photo albuns with him and well... hope that he lives more than expected.
So that you wonīt have to live your life with the thought on the back of your mind "I could have...."
Sorry for the long post. And be strong!
Wow, great post, shows alot of maturity for someone who is 16! My father passed away out of nowhere about 3 years ago, except that I was 1800 miles away and hadn't seen him in about 2 years.
Glen,
I'll be thinking about you (sorry I just saw this, I haven't been checking in as much as I used to) and putting in prayers for you, your father, and families. Spend as much time with him as possible now, but you already know this, so I won't say anything else.
