Re: My dad was told he has one year to live in which he will starve to death :-(
Glen,
You have my deepest sympathy. My father was diagnosed with cancer roughly 6 months ago, underwent various treatments and operations, and fortunately has a %80 chance of survival because of the type of cancer he has (I won't go into the details). Even though he is still running strong, that other %20 chance that he won't make it still weighs very heavily on my (and my family's) mind. With me being somewhat of a free-spirit, an individualist, and a misfit, he is the only person that I really identify with. When I first heard the diagnosis, it made me appreciate the very strong relationship we always had, and it made me realize that it could end in 15 months or in 15 years...you never know when something like this is going to happen. I've been spending as much time with him as possible since I'm between job-contracts and he is semi-retired, and it has kept him in good spirits (which boosts the immune system). This is the first time I have ever discussed my father's situation in a forum; it is your particular situation that compels me to write this post, and to let you know that you are not alone on this fight.
I'll join the other members in this thread by saying that you should continue to spend as much time as possible with him. I wish the best for him, you, and your family....don't give up.
Jeff

Glen-
I'm heading in to lead Easter services at my church and I just wanted to let you know you are all being prayed for. God bless, brother.

Glen,
This turn of events hits closer than you know. My father suffered a stroke last September, and passed away on January 17th. No words can express what you are going through and will go through. I'm not much of a religious man, but I speak to God from time to time and will keep you and your family in my thoughts.

Re: My dad was told he has one year to live in which he will starve to death :-(
Glen, my thoughts are with you, man. :/
I can't offer much in the way of consolation or guidance - I'm 26, so while I've seen my parents begin to age the idea of their eventual death is still pretty abstract - so I suspect I'm just wasting my words here, but... I guess it's worth thinking that you've obviously come from a very supportive family. He's in many ways made you the man you are today, and he'll continue to live on through you, both in the memories of your father you'll always carry with you, and in the way he's made you see and understand the world.
Watching him die will be one of the most painful things you'll most likely ever go through, but part of the reason it's going to be so hard is that he was there for you for so long and has obviously been such a great father to you. I guess it's like the price of having such an amazing parent, in a way, that the pain of their passing is equivalent to the joy they brought to your life, and over time that pain will fade but the memories of what makes you love him so much in the first place will not.
Again, you'll be in my thoughts, Glenn. I just hope when it happens it's painless for him.

Re: My dad was told he has one year to live in which he will starve to death :-(
bummer to have to update this thread so soon and for one last time...
early this Sunday morning my dad passed away... no doubt to a better place.
god bless my mom & prayers for her continued health and good spirits... she was there for his last breath and to comfort him and reassure him that all is well here and that it's OK to let his body go as.
may my loving father rest in peace ...glen
