Referrals?

Okay, on my profile, it says i have 1 referral, and i was wondering what this is. And also, i see a Plus sign next to some peoples names in the list of people who are logged in. and katrina even says that the plus appears next to my name! could someone help me out with the referrals and these little plus symbols next to our names?

fyi - when someone registers there is an optional field where they can type in the "referral" username.... glen
