Even with a dynamic, the Ip block of the ISP remains the same and you can still get back to the ISP and they can verify who was logged in at that time.

Re: Security clampdown READ ASAP (multiple logins, IP tracking, contacting others)

i'll link to some IP locators such as this:
http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation

even on AOL you won't get an IP from Brazil unless you are there. you'll instantly tell a proxy/spoofed IP as well as the scammer from Brazil pretending to be located in the USA where he's pretending he'll ship from

every post and registration here has it's IP tracked, but these are private to myself and the moderators as needed... glen

Good moves Glen. It's a shame that privacy/security online is close to nill... hats off to taking steps to help prevent problems.

Good observation. vBulletin nails it as .nl though as does the 4 WHOIS links visible on the page

Search WHOIS data at:
RIPE
ARIN
APNIC
LACNIC

Sure there are better/other methods to check the IP and various methods will be referenced & linked. ...glen

I'm kind of lost. What exactly brought this on? What were some posters doing that made you crack down on them? Don't get me wrong, it's a good idea, but... why? Just curious...

things like...

* too much "buy an ipod spam". now they can only post spam in the VERIFYforum not in 4 forums generating many replies (you can't reply to a thread there).

* idiot worldwide pm/contacting people posting WTB ads trying to sell guitars they don't own.

* people logging on and/or posting with multiple usernames

* overall desire to make new members more accountable for what they do now and later (existing members are easily banned/removed)

Re: Security clampdown READ ASAP (multiple logins, IP tracking, contacting others)

Starting Monday (tomorrow) I'm going to be suspending retroactively suspending all members who have logged in using multiple accounts.

These members will be given a "suspended" account limited to doing nothing except:
* allowed to PM me (1 message limit)
* allowed to see and post in the VERIFY forum. Multi-username users can post there which login you want to keep.

Unfortunately only ONE member has PM'd about this issue and there are DOZENS of you guys using multiple logins, including a few today. It's mind boggling but you were warned... glen
