it works pretty well (not perfect) but you know that first hand as i banned that "new account" you registered to use when when you were suspended

i'm not going to get into specifics 'cause that helps troublemakers try to skirt the system... no security is fool-proof. lets just say that if i block a range from Brazil a few honest people will get KO'd then email "i can't get online" and i can open up the IP spectrum a little.

Work vs home is more troublesome (you could hide one account at work only and one account at home only) and shows usage patterns (night vs day posting)... glen

Simple -

So they can use multple personalities. But it usually ends up being quite obvious as they reveal themselves. It's hard to be two different people

Also, they can break the RULES with one username and if they get banned it's no biggie as they'll just use the other username.

Please note - if you guys are SHARING COMPUTERS with other jemsite users you need to post ASAP as this will definately trip the "multiple login" detector and otherwise result in an automatic suspension of your account (easily rectified if legitimate)... glen

Are you posting these banned users to the "banned list" for all to see? I'd be interested to know who does it - it may even prove or disprove some of my theories.

i don't publish "banned" member list but you can search any member and see their status.

the suspended users (who need to contact me to reinstate their account) are listed in the "forum leaders" link (bottom of forum frontpage)

#4. Use smarts in the classifieds: if a new (or old) member contacts you about items for sale first do a search for their posts. You can see their IP (soon) in the "Verify member" forum. Unfortunately alot of you guys and girls are careless about purchasing online and this will help protect you from yourselves

Sounds good to me! The whole "verification" system sounds very sensible to me. And hopefully it will work pretty well too. As you say, this will stop all of the "new users" that only make 1 post creating havoc.

To clampdown on people who don't know when enough debate is enough, I added a feature where any moderator can REMOVE/BAN you from any thread.

Hopefully this will not be needed often but it can protecting someone from further suspension or discipline. ...glen

Good to see there's room for respectful debates, but when it gets old and repetitive this will be nice.
