Finished Jem neck? - What the..

I work at a music store and a guy brought in a '91 Floral with a finished neck. *He swore up and down that it was new when he bought it and the neck was like that. *The finish was done really well. *Any chance Ibanez finished it? *

It's clear coat with kind of a yellowish tint. *Nitro cellulose possibly?

It seems random but original 777 necks were lightly oiled with no acrylic finish. The 10 was similar.

Along the way Ibanez saw the need to foul up a winning formula and now the VWH and DBK typically have the annoying poly-like clear finish on the rear of the neck. Luckily it is easily removed  ...glen

Also a Lot of one-off's have surfaced through the years. This could be one of those you never know. Some of the ones I have seen have really strange factory finishes or just one or two simple things different about them from the norm of production standards.

Finished Jem neck?

Hey guys,

I've seen it mentioned (in a negative tone) several times on this list that the newer VWH's have a coated neck. *I have a 2001 model and the neck is smooth as silk, basically a satin finish and very sweet - not sticky or thick at all. *Is this what you're talking about? *If so, give me that neck any day. *I love satin-finished necks. *

Am I missing something?

Yes, that is the standard VWH neck and it has remained unchanged since '93 ... glen

Of course, the problem is it doesn't remain like that for very long. My 7620's neck started out nice and sleek and smooth, and within a few months of hard playing, had buffed itself up to a sticky gloss. As glen said, luckily it's easily removed.
