Jem neck dimensions - the different sizes and feel of each

Hi all,

I'm positive this was dicussed in the early forum, but I can't find the stuff I want to know all in the one place. Sorry if this has already been discussed here in the new forum.

1. Do the FP jems have a different size neck to the VWH? (thickness, "roundness")

2. Are the early Jems fitted with wizard necks?

Could anyone pls help with these questions cause frankly they're giving me the poo's. I know that I've read somewhere about FP's and VWH's having different necks, I think glen was the one that said they were different, but I'm not sure (sorry if it wasn't you glen! ).

This topic has been the cause of many a conflict between me and a friend. :bash:

The VWH neck is slimmer (front to back) and less D shaped than the original 777 necks.

Only the JEM7PBK and JEM777VDY had "wizard-like" necks... glen

Thanx glen

Sorry for my ignorance, do the specs indicate that the Jem 7FP, BFP, and VWH all have "jem" neck's?

I was under the impression that Jem VWH's necks have a different shape, width, and feel to the Floral Pattern, and Blue Floral Pattern..

<humbly asks>
Am I wrong?

PS. Sorry for my annoying questions, I debated for a few mins with myself before submitting this post.

It's just that over here in australia, Jem 7vwh's let alone Japanese RG's don't hang on the walls of guitar shops around my area. We only get *Korean Ibanez's, Samick's, and Yamaha's. The expensive guitars on the walls are always Les Paul's or Fenders (which I don't like...but that's another story).

Unfortunately there's no place for me to go to try the guitars out.

They are all called "JEM Necks".

Width is the same. The VWH neck is different howevver... a migration to a flatter "wizard-like" profile without the D shape of yesteryear. Variations from the final hand-finish aside... glen

There are differences between the 7DBK and 7VWH necks as well. If you take a set of calipers to it, the 7DBK comes off looking like a Wizard profiled neck to me...

Still love it though

as I understood (and felt after playing an FP, a VWH and a DBK)

The FP had a D-shaped neck which although slim, was still more substantial than a Wizard.

The VWH seemed like a D with the corners rounded off. *It mostly feels like a more elliptical version of the Wizard.

The DBK feels nearly exactly like a Wizard neck to me.

you can see a visualization here. This shows the original JEM777 neck

The FP was step one of having it feel more like the Wizard.

The VWH was step two in the process.

The DBK/DNA is step three in the migration, as per Steve's request.

The 7DBK is supposed to have the "super" wizard neck. While comparing the measurements at http://www.jemsite.com/axes/htm_features/det_nk.htm with the wizard neck, they appear to have the same dimensions. Is it only the skunk stripe that separates the super from the normal wiz neck?

the stripe is the notable change. Keep in mind however, the measurements cant describe the profile or D-curve accurately. The DBK is more a mix between the VWH and original Wizard profile. That is what ibanez came up with when working w/ Vai. Perhaps the super wizard is the same... glen

From the old ***
and descriptions, I was under the impression that:

-Wizard necks had a W shape
-Ultra necks had a U shape [is there as difference between this and a D-shape?]
-some others [like the JS] had a V shape [aka Vintage]

The Jem was designed to fit in between the W and the U;
wide and thin as a Wizard, profiled as an Ultra,

however, as *said, Steve's taste has changed over the years, moving the Jem so close to the Wizard that the two became indiscernable.

Question: what shape is a UV777PBK?

a W shaped neck? *That doesn't sound right. *The Wizard neck is like a flat D shape. *The ultra was thinner from string to string and had a deeper bowl shape to it's profile. *It felt nearly circular to me. *The JEM was between the flattened D and a circle. *The early JEMs were most near the middle, with the JEM7FP refining it. *The JEM7VWH seems like the last one with the eliptical but flat feel. *The new JEMs feel very very flat, like wizard.
