I've only encountered minimal resistance from flight crews when walking on with any of my guitars. The one time that the stewardess suggested that I should have my guitar (a Les Paul Custon) checked in I politely told her how much the guitar cost and she put it in her own space up front. Beware of the baggage handlers - well before I boarded my flight in San Juan an airline baggage handler insisted that I check in my guitar - emphaticall stating that I would not be allowed to bring my guitar (again the Les Paul) on to the plane. If I had given him that guitar I probably never would have seen it again.
There is a coat closet to the right just as you enter the plane which can accomidate your guitar in a hardshell case - The baby Taylor travels in the overhead.
