A little bat...

A little bat sleeping outside at 8am. Saw this little guy while walking to work, right outside the building, at eye level. Strange he was out in daylight at such a low level. I have seen them flying downtown before but not sleeping outside in plain view. photo taken with iphone about 6" away from him. Too bad I didn't have a real camera with me. Blurry due to strong winds and I didn't want to stand there any longer than I had to. His face was against the wall. Body a little longer than a golf ball.

Went for a walk during lunch....he's still there. sound asleep. got a better pic. i'm surprised no one sees this guy.

I wouldn't touch it . . . it could have a disease. Bats are very cute in general though - and that one is.

There's been lotsa bats around here at night.

Seen several of them on trees. I just poke at em with a stick.

that guy was still there this morning! i had a feeling he would be. still resting right attached to the wall. i checked online and found a bat rescue organization. spoke with a really nice lady and they sent someone to get him. they take care of bats and make sure they are ok. she said if they sleep longer than 20 hours it's either starting hibernation, which is a little early in the season, or he's weak. based on my photo she said he looks healthy and is more than likely weak and just needs a few days rest. Another day he could have died due to lack of nutrition and being too weak to feed. another thing i learned is bats can't launch to fly from the ground. they have to free-fall and go into a glide since the wings and legs aren't strong enough to "take off." being that he was 6' off the ground, this wouldn't have been possible. so i did my good deed. they were very happy i called.
