Oh, my songwriting teacher would pull his hair out! I didn't use "baby girl" or even "baby", but I used "girl" and about every cliche you can imagine. As far as songs go, it's havarti, or actually closer to Velveeta, but what the heck. I didn't think any of my Rush influenced odd time sig stuff would appeal to the masses, as there have only been a handful of odd meter songs with mass appeal. Let's see, there's Money, Living in the Past, that's all I can think of right now. This one is strictly for the money! I've never made it in the business and I'm already selling out! ARGH!

Here it is, in 3/4:

I hope the chords line up right:

Gmaj7 Cmaj7
Looking ahead, the future’s so vast
D/G F/Bb
It’s time to move on, pull myself from the past
Gmaj7 Cmaj7
It’s always been you, right there by my side
D/G F/Bb
Through the times that we’ve laughed and we’ve cried
A-7 G/B C D
Still I can’t believe that it’s happening to me
A-7 G/B C D D7
The hard work, the wonder, the chance to succeed
G C
On Top of the World, with you by my side
G C
I feel we can soar straight up to the sky
G C
On Top of the World, and feeling so free
A-7 G/B C D
No matter what happens, I’m thankful to see
A-7 G/B C D Gmaj7 Gmaj7 Cmaj7 D9
That you’re still just you, and I’m still me

Gmaj7 Cmaj7
I want to say “Thank you” for being my friend
D/G F/Bb
And sticking beside me, through thick and through thin
Gmaj7 Cmaj7
Whatever may come, wherever I go
D/G F/Bb
I’m taking you with me, because girl (boy) don’t you know
A-7 G/B C D
I’ll love you forever, and ever, and more
A-7 G/B C D D7
And I found myself, when we opened this door

G C
On Top of the World, with you by my side
G C
I feel we can soar straight up to the sky
G C
On Top of the World, and feeling so free
A-7 G/B C D
No matter what happens, I’m thankful to see
A-7 G/B C D G G G G
That you’re still just you, and I’m still me

E- C G G
When my world’s upside down
E- C G D/F#
I can count on you to turn it around
E- C G G
And when life gets too hard to bear
A-7 G/B C D
I can count on you to always be there
A-7 G/B C D D7 E
Girl I want you by my side everywhere, everywhere
A D
On Top of the World, with you by my side
A D
I feel we can soar straight up to the sky
A D
On Top of the World, and feeling so free
B-7 A/C D E
No matter what happens, I’m thankful to see
B-7 A/B D E Amaj7 Amaj7 Dmaj7 Dmaj7
That you’re still just you, and I’m still me
Amaj7 Dmaj7
On Top of the World, yeah yeah yeah
Amaj7 Dmaj7
On Top of the World, I’m so glad you’re with me
Amaj7 Dmaj7
E Amaj7

Note the obligatory "Manilow Modulation" in the second chorus! It's cheese, like I said, but stranger things have happened. I sure hope Pat Pattison isn't reading this..............he'd kill me!

That's enough saccharine to give 1,000 lab rats cancer.

In other words, sounds like a hit!

Re: American Idol Songwriter competition

I've always wondered why all these kids go on national tv and sing the same lame songs all the time. Do they not have a brain to pick better songs that no one has sung? Why is it that they're always singing Stevie Wonder's songs or Barry Manilow stuff? I'd be quite impressed if someone had the balls to sing Robben Ford's "Mystic Man" on national TV.
