Any Captains Out There?

My family and I are looking to get a small-ish boat and I've got a few questions for those in the know..

I've been told that I / we don't need a license, but do need to go on a course to get an ICC,
are there any age restrictions for taking this, like a car test?

I'm going up to a marina tomorrow to take a look at the boats and have A chat with some people.

And what kind of maintenance is do i need to do after using the boat?
wash it with fresh water is all i know.

A boat in itself is pretty low maintenance. Keep it clean and free of leaks and you're good.

Marine engine maintenance is another matter...

I have a good friend who has been in the marine industry here for many years. He describes a boat as being a "whole in the water that needs to be continuously filled wth money."
If it floats or flies, it's expensive.
