Re: Anyone here a Doctor / have their PhD?

I was Pre-med, then I changed my mind, totally changed my career choice and education path. Basically I made a major mistake (for me I did make a mistake), I wish I would have stuck it out and not went weak. Got my degree in BA. What I'm stating here is, just because someone has there Phd, doesn't mean they are smarter than anyone else, it just means they stayed focused and followed through. Some of the smartest people I have met, never went to college. They are so many different levels and variations that define intelligence. Moreover, I have met some very "dumb" educated people, and I'm sure most of us have experienced both. DO WHAT YOU WANT IN LIFE...now if I can live what I speak (2 different animals)!

Re: Anyone here a Doctor / have their PhD?

while writing my Master's Thesis, I read a couple of dissertations on the same subject (computerized structural analysis, dealing with aerospace structures) and found out most of it was pure cack. I just couldn't believe some professors had actually promoted that stuff.

On the other had, I also have a teammate who has a PhD in applied mathematics (his wife, sister and two of his best mates are also PhDs in same field ) and I have great respect for what he did, juggling family and education.

I've seen plenty of cases where mediocre students got PhD positions just because they needed someone and all the good ones had found 'proper' employment. At the same time, I do accept there are many people with a true interest in academics, who would even do it for free. Ironically, that mate of mine, is now doing a post-doc sponsored by a big oil company.
