Bid not backed!

Great news on the olympics not coming here. I won't give the entire list of why I'm VERY happy but here are a few...

1 less traffic...as if we don't have enough! people think it's bad when there's a bears game and concert in town! wait for the entire world to visit here?

2 more construction...as if we don't have enough! mayor daley was going to spend millions to build stadiums just to tear down afterwards, which he said, don't worry, taxes won't increase.

3 crime...enough said

4 terrorist activities

5 crowds would be ridiculous for miles around, all hotels booked, all trains too crowded, etc.

people don't stop to think, what's in it for them? it's all politics. on another note, it's also a good thing since oprah needed to be taken down a few pegs!

anway, this post has gotten too long already. more people are against it than for it and i wanted to share a photo i took moments after the announcement in the streets!

i would like to say, i found it like this....and this says it all! i love this shot and just submitted to the Chicago Tribune

Yeah thousands of new jobs being created and millions of tourist and working peoples dollars being spent in during a recession would be brutal for the city

I was hoping we would get it, I know tons of people who could use the work, plus if you look back at what the chicago worlds fair did for the city, I think for the small inconvience of traffic and so forth the lasting effects would have been substancial.

There won't be less traffic, the traffic that already exists in the city won't be going anywhere. There just wont be a brief increase in traffic during the games. I'd be willing to bet in the long run, the upgrades to public transportation and road construcion would end up reducing traffic.

Most of the construction and updates need to be done anyway.

I don't get the crime example, are you saying there would be an increase in crime or because of the crime in the city the Olympics shouldn't be held here? I've been wrong before I I'd bet Rio is just as bad, if not worse than Chicago.

Terrorist activities? Really? That was a concern of yours?

Hotels booked and crowded trains are good for the economy. Jobs would have been created or saved, millions of people would come to the city and suburbs, spend a ton of money and leave.

It would have been a short inconvienience at best

Elcid, you are right with the jobs, i'll definately give you that. with crime, i was referring to there possibly being more. with large events, there are always issues. the larger the event, the easier to get away with something. yes, terrorism was a thought. one of the largest events held in the USA? yeah, that raised a red flag. would be nice if the city used some of that money now to give to schools, shelters, the roads....but it won't happen. all that would create jobs as well but again, it won't happen, unfortunately.

Exactly, it WON'T happen, it would have had we gotten the Olympics.
The one issue I have is that the city and its politics is dodgy to begin with.
Think about how we've had 4 of our governors imprisoned or indicted and how many more inner city representatives, alderman, (women included) have been brought up on charges of corruption, it happens ALL the time here. Think about the Rezko affiliation during Obama's campaign. Imagine if and when Stroger is found out, I can't wait for that day. Ultimately, the influx of jobs and cash, I think would've helped the city overall. Roads would've been widened, transportation massively improved, security upgraded, IMO too much, you wouldn't be able to fart downtown without someone knowing it. Aside from that, more good than bad. Rio should be interesting, crime & prostitution will wind up in overdrive down there.

It's not like we're not used to it already, I don't know if lil Rio can handle it.
