Bulking Up For Football

(That's american football for all u foreigners)
Anyway, It's my first year of high school football and I'm trying to get big so I have a chance at playing in some varsity games. I have been lifting weights religiously for the past 2 years and I am at about 6'1" and 190 lbs. Anyone got any pointers?

Steroids

Hoenstly, if you're 6'1" and can't get in a varsity game, it's athletic talent and coordination you need more than size

Re: Bulking Up For Football

I play on the line in the hardest conference in minnesota so most of those guys are 6'6" and 260 lbs at least. I feel like a wimp when I lift with them

Edit: I'm pretty sure steroids are illegal, Rich. Why don't you talk to Barry Bonds about that ;o)

Re: Bulking Up For Football

dude, im 6'2" and played rugby for years, its a similar game mate.
I tried to do exactly the same as you but it was disastrous !!!
dont do it mate, I was 190 lbs before I started on the "bulking up" I wasnt fat at all and was a pretty fast runner.
I managed to get to 225 lbs but a lot of it was just fat, I suffered quite badly as a result and although I was heavier (harder to stop) I wasnt as fit.

If you decide to go that way, be very careful !
Ive lost most of it now but its taken years and I had sciatica and all kinds of nasty stuff after I bulked up....

at 6'1" and 190 lbs its all about body position in the tackle, if someones trying to "take you out" I do the airplanes taking off body position, they can be as big as you like but when 190 lbs is doing 13mph and rising fast youve got to be VERY strong and have a great tackling technique to stop that...

and if youre tackling a 6'6" giant it still a fact that no-one runs with their legs tied together, although I always favoured the "block" tackle, as soon as you are about to make the tackle, straighten the back and extend the legs using the shoulder to the thigh/midriff position in the opponent... grab both thighs with you r arms and bobs yer uncle !!!
although american footy is different with the tackling laws !!!
are you allowed to fend off (hand off) and stuff...
190lbs should be enough bud.. ive talked enough..

Re: Bulking Up For Football

I can't give you much advice but my son can...... he says conditioning..... You've got to work out as much as possible (3-4 times a week). Run the bleacher steps, weight lifting, sprints (40 yard) and short 15 to 20 yard , aerobics/cardio. Learn your position and all the plays, both defense and offense. If you feel you have the raw talent, go to some summer football camps. Your high school may run some or send their players to one. Most important is a healthy diet, no "partying", and plenty of sleep. It doesn't do any good to put on weight from junk food. That = fat.... you want muscle. Why I say this, is my son is entering college in two weeks. (Yep, football players start earlier. Their camps begin before classes begin.) Anyway, he had a very good high school football "career" as he calls it. He is into fitness and was the starting running back at his high school, both as a JV player and his junior and senior year. His new collegiate workouts make his high school workouts look like "gravy" he says. He got those handed to him as soon as he "signed" with his college of choice back in March. He says you have to work at playing not just want to play. You may want to talk to the coaches and get their prospective on what you need to do to help both you and the team. Get mom & dad involved too. Good luck and give it 100%.

Them's fightin' words!

Jemplayer55: I have been attending football camp all summer along with lifting weights 2 hours every other day. BTW, when did your son make it on varsity?

fighting words

the only other piece of advice this sissy rugby player has is:

that sport will **** your fingers up... !!!!

believe me, a veteran of broken fingers, wrists, ribs and dislocated everythings...

one day you will have to choose... guitar/football..

ENJOY THE FOOTBALL !!!!!!!
I wish I could still play rugby but... injuries and years have the better of me !!

whoop some ass boyo !!!

Re: Bulking Up For Football

Salad, 2 hours of lifting per session is way way too much, you need to do a lot less reps and sets by increasing your weights and intensity. 45 mins to an hour MAX and your done, any more and you are turning it into a cardio session which defeats the purpose. That's if you want to put on size. The more cardio you do (no more than 20-25 minutes a day if you want to put on size) the less size you will gain, the body is an efficient machine plain and simple. And diet, eat a lot of protein and eat many small meals throughout the day. Get lots of sleep. When you do cardio, make it interval training.
