Calling Extreme Gamers with Graphic card Knowledge

hey

I'm making up a new Gaming / Recording machine consisting of an AMD 64 4000 Proccesor into an ASUS SLI PCI-EXPRESS board, and I'm down to 2 cards for the GPU

I got it down to the HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X850 XT and the XFX GeForce 7800GT Extreme Edition which is a steal at the price its going for since it's practically a capped GTX

What I'm wondering is, which is the better system now, and is the DX9 trend going to grow more over the next few years making the ATI Radeon a better choice.

Cheers in advance,

Spike

You can only use a GeForce card with the SLI! (As its made by nvidia). You also might want to check that that GeForce model you mention actually supports SLI, last time i checked only the top model 7800 supported it.

If you want an SLI type setup with an ATI youll have to wait until their Crossfire gets released properly (and buy the correct crossfire motherboard.).

Id stick with nvidia at the moment, theyre way ahead in benchmarks at this level.

Re: Calling Extreme Gamers with Graphic card Knowledge

I have an SLI system running two 6600GTs. I've sworn off of ATI products because of the terrible drivers and customer service i've experienced. However, I have a friend who sites the same reasons for swearing off nVidia. The performance of the two cards you listed should be about on par for todays stuff. Don't even bother worrying about how it will perform in three years from now. Either of those cards will be struggling with the games coming out in the next year (at max settings of course). That's the nature of the beast.

I'd go with the nVidia simply because you can do SLI (assuming you also have a PCI-E SLI motherboard), so when the 7800GT becomes a cheap budget card in a year or so, you can plop in a 2nd one and get a performance boost on the cheap. Also, if it means anything to you, nVidia has great support under linux (ATI does not).

Funny enough, I got friends who work at ATI up here in Canada and they complain about the same thing.
