Computer game music.

This is a bit weird, but I thought I'd post it anyway. The other day I was looking through some of my ancient Playstation games and came across a Namco game called "Air Combat". Obviously you can tell from the name it's a flight sim. Aviation being my main interest in life (aside from music) I've always loved flight sims... anyways, I thought I'd have a go at it, so I put it in the PS2.

The game was out in 1996 or something, but I'l tell you what... the in-game music is very infectious! It's sort of 80s - early 90s rock, sort of similar in some ways to Satriani etc. but with lots of keyboards thrown in. It's really good music... I was wondering if any of you had heard it? The music from the sequel, Ace Combat 2, is pretty similar. Take a listen to it! It's good...

Anyways, I just thought I'd bring this up, since I've found it to be an unusual yet very helpful influence in writing my own music (I do instrumental stuff).

Making music for computers games and making a huge wad of cash at the same time is what dreams are made of for me.

I remember Soundgarden doing the music for Road Rash on the PSX. Didn't Steve Vai do a similar game?

Re: Computer game music.

Satriani writes a lot of music for games...

He was in some project with EA Sports to write and perform music for their games, I'm not sure if he was doing music for the game Nascar too...I don't know...

Re: Computer game music.

Yeah. I looked at the game credits and apparently the guy who did the guitar on Air Combat was someone called Kazutaka Fujimoto.

If anyone happens to have the game, on the "Start" screen go to "Options" and go into "Sound". There is a music player with which you can listen to all the songs in the game. I reccommend listening to "Heavy Hearted", "Head First" and "Night and Day". Tracks 03, 06 and 07, I think.

"Summer Song" by Satch is on GT4 though... excellent to listen to while beasting a Skyline around the Nurburgring.

I HAVE/had THAT GAME!!!!! We just sold it lol : (
I sat down to that and played along! Waaay cool music. It helped me composing etc. too, at which I am terrible :P
Glad to know someone else appreciates the (only) merits of Air Combat.

Re: Computer game music.

Hey! Yeah I've found myself playing along too. I've already worked out most of the chord progressions in the songs, some of the lead guitar parts too. Not sure about the keyboards though...

Would anyone happen to have any tabs etc...?

I have always loved video game music when I was growing up, alot of the stuff on the Castlevania, Ninja gaiden, Gradius, Zelda, Megaman, Metroid, Double Dragon, etc, has inspired me.

Castlevania : Symphony Of The Night has my favorite music ever.

I love the music from the Megaman games on the SNES... particularly the X series. Best MIDI music ever.

I'll give the music on 'Air Combat' a listen though.

Yep, the whole Ace Combat series has some really kick ass instrumentals. I really like some of the Final Fantasy stuff too.

One of my favorite sound tracks to a game is Painkiller. I just love the metal riffs in those tunes. I actually learned a few on the guitar since they were so catchy.

Best overall soundtrack to a game I have actually played would have to be Wipeout XL. I dont like techno all that much but gawd damn that was some good stuff. Id probably say Nightmare Creatures 2 for the game I've never played. I heard Rob Zombie did the whole thing.

Re: Computer game music.

I have the soundtracks for the 2 N64 Zelda games (Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask) straight from Japan. Incredible stuff, they went to great lengths to produce that game's sound and music. Its freakin EPIC.

Awesome CDs, awesome games, awesome music. My favorite, along with Super Mario RPG (SNES).
