converting avi to mpeg for youtube

hey guys can anyone point in the direction of a freeware piece of software that will convert avi to mpeg for you tube? every converter i find just gives a loss picture and time stamps..thanks in advance!!!

AVI is a container format. You need to find out the format of the audio and video files contained within it.
