Do Abalone have to be killed for their MOP !!!

I have recently been wondering about Mother of Pearl, and know that it comes from Abalone, but what i don't know is that does a living creature have to be killed for it, or do the guitar companies, use shells that have been discarded by the creature ?

I know I sound all hippy and stuff, but I am vegetarian, and I have been looking at my Ibanez Giger Rg2 and noticed alot of MOP on it. Yes it looks nice, but id rather it not used in my guitar.

I know Steve Vai is a Vegetarian and respects all living creaters, but I wonder his choice in using MOP on the vine tree of life inlays.

I'm interested in other peoples opinion on the matter whether you agreee its good or bad, and if there is an alternative ?

or even if someone can tell me that the MOP process doesn't kill the abalone, but i doubt it cause people eat it and they must do something with the shell...

is Abalone a sentient being, or is it just a sea turd

As far as I know, Abalone, like other bivalves, do not discard their shells. So harvesting the "mother of pearl" would require killing them.

Either way people are going to eat abalone so why not benefit from the byproduct?

From what I read some countries actually farm them for their meat, I would assume they would then sell off the shells to companies for jewelry etc.

No, i dont wear leather or have it in my car, and I try and do what I can, to make me feel good about myself. I don't believe that the world should be vegetarian, I firmly believe that there needs to be a balance of vegetarians, to meat eaters. yin yang sort of thing. If you feel that eating meat is right for you and using them in your everyday life, then that is fine with me. But i feel that with living in an age of technology, that there are alternatives.

Just my opinion, and I too used to love my friends that sat right next to mash potatoes, they tasted wonderful, but having got to know more types of animals over the last few years, im reluctant to eat them.

So I may be selling my RG2 giger, cause Im saving up for a jem that has the pyramid inlays, hopefully they don't have abalone, in fluro pink green and yellow

Abolone? It's pretty good if cooked right. Tough if not.

Please, abolone isn't killed to use for inlays, they're harvested to eat and what would normally be thrown away is recycled and used by many industries as decorative elements.

Personally I'd prefer clams or oysters, just not in my inlay

While it's noble to want to be considerate of all other living things, I think this is kind of going too far. You'll drive yourself nuts stickling on every aspect of guitars: trees killed for the woods, the chemicals used (and potentially harming the environment and killing other creatures) for the finishes and hardware, and even the shop conditions where these guitars are built... and on and on and on and on...
