Ever happen to you before?

So I spring from bed bright and early this morning with my brain still humming with possibilities from the Peter Huttlinger show I saw last night. Seriously if you enjoy solo acoustic guitar you owe it to yourself to check this guy out. I digress, I wake up and grab my trusty Ibanez AW acoustic and rummage around for the nice set of phosphor bronzes I purchased earlier the following day looking to spend some time shedding. So I remove the crusty low E and replace it. The A follows. Then the D. Now the G....... where's the G?!?! No G string?!?! Are you kidding me?! My d'addario (SP) strings didn't come with a G string!!! Anyone ever have this happen before? Any chance I could go back to the store (daddies) and get a replacement? Hopefully for free seeing as money has been extra tight these days.

Re: Ever happen to you before?

Never bought a set with a string missing, but I've had D'Addario strings break on me as I am restringing. Twice I had the high E snap way before it had reached pitch, and on different guitars, with no problems from other brand strings.

I no longer use D'Addario's.

Rock on!

Yeah, usually I'm very choosy on strings but I just told the guy to give me some .13 acoustic strings. That's what I got. Kinda blows. A guitar with one funky string just doesn't feel right.

Re: Ever happen to you before?

I've gotten sets of strings where one string was bronze instead of nickel
I put them on anyway. (Here's a pic of the bronze A in action)
But yeah, I would go back and say the G was missing. I would guess they'd throw you a single string without much of an issue if you have your receipt.

Re: Ever happen to you before?

Considering the vast quantities that the big string manufacturers actually produce each year, it's bound to happen every so often. Even with the most stringent quality control measures, I imagine at least a few packs per year come out that are missing strings (or that have similar mistakes; I've never had a pack that was technically missing a string, but I have had at least one pack that had a duplicate string in place of another one...two .009's instead of a .009 and .011).

I'd be interested to see the stats from a big maker like D'Addario, though...what's their acceptable margin of error...something like .05% of all of their packs have a mistake, I imagine.

But yeah, the retailer should just crack open another pack and give you the missing string...they can always relegate the remainder to their pile o' spares (every shop has a pile o' spares).

It has happened to me before...You take it on the chin and pony up the couple bucks for a single string, very hard to prove the string was missing. Especially after a day or two...

But if you go there all the time they might just give you a single string. They should have a box of singles around!

Re: Ever happen to you before?

I heard alot of stories about D'addario packs missing something here and there.

I personally had a pack with all the strings with an extra 0.09 E string, giving me a total of 7 strings. hehe

Never happened to me.
The double E string is fairly common, but a missing one... weird.

I never had that happen but I recently had to go through 11 (yes eleven) sets of flat wound D'Addario bass strings to get a single G string that was even long enough to reach the nut! No it wasnt a short scale set When I first got back to the store before looking at it they were insisting they need to teach me how to string up a guitar.... I offered $5K to the first one that could make the string reach the tuner

I think someone has been playing with the programs on thier CNC machines

This WAS the first time in about two decades of using D'Addario's that I had any problem though
