Gaming Laptop?

Anyone know of a decent make?

So far I've seen Rock laptops. Seen one for £1250 ex vat - 19 inch screen, GeForce 7950GTX, AMD 2.2Ghz Turion, 2GB DDR2 667, and a 100GB 7200rpm hard drive.

My mother has a Vaio, which has been pretty good, but I'm out of the loop on processors. It does run X3 really very nicely, though.

I thought about just getting a desktop, but I'd like something I can take and carry around Uni, AND play games on.

Any help would be appreciated!

Don't rule out Apple. My MacBook Pro does a great job of playing games on Windows, plus you get OS X to boot (no pun intended )!

I looked at alienware, but Rockdirect seemed better value for money - a 7950GTX, higher res screen and 2GB of ram for the same price.

Apple is something I hadn't thought of. My best mate has an Apple, and now he's a complete Apple freak.

I think I'd rather stay Windows PC, though - what I know about Apples could probably fit on a postage stamp!

Rockdirect? Haven't heard of those before. I just checked them out, sadly they don't do AMDs . But nice to see that they offer the latest Nvidia cards for laptops.

I think Alienware is overpriced and overrated. My friend's became a $4,000 paperweight. It convieniently took a crap one month after the warranty expired.

fettouhi - From what I've heard, Intel Core 2 Duo's seem to whip AMD Am2 X2s is every aspect - And I'm certainly impressed with mother's Vaio running X3 with all the bells and whistles on without slow-down.

sick-boy - I've looked at Cyberpower, but they don't go above a 7600 - Ideally I'd like atleast a 7900, because if I'm gonna spend £1300 on a laptop, it's gotta last a while!

Just looked at Velocity Micro, but they are also more expensive than Rockdirect!

Velocity Micro is a good company. I build my desktop PC's, but if I needed a laptop, I'd go with them.

Intel _laptop_ CPUs always were better than AMDs. That is why all of their processors are derived from mobile microarchitecture now.

Not rue, before the centrino they performed better but overheated EXTREMELY easily and therefor fairly useless for anything but general internet/word processing.

Centrino is just renamed Pentium-M with a particular chipset. And it was available long before AMD even had laptop processors, so I maintain that Intel _laptop_ CPUs were always better than AMD.

MBP doesn't work with Vista all that well. It's probably OK for games, and it's blazingly fast, but trackpad doesn't work after you wake it up from sleep, and audio is choppy sometimes. At the very least I'd wait for official Vista support in Boot Camp if you're going to run Vista on it.

It gets a 4.8 Vista score, with Gaming Graphics being the lowest. Still 4.8 is a very respectable rating for gaming graphics on a laptop, especially if you consider that MBPs run their Radeons underclocked to reduce heat and prolong battery life.
