Yes, we live in the wealthiest nation, but it obviously is not without its issues.
To say that we are just complaining about gas prices while the New Orleans disaster is taking place is rather simplistic and judgmental on your part. We're talking about gas prices because we are immediately affected by them. Many of us are doing something to help the Katrina relief effort also.
Im not describing socialist country or society at all. Im refering to equal opotunities, Im refering to justice and fairness. Most western europe countries work like this, and the are hardly comunist countries (unlesss you think Norway, Sweeden, France, Italy and Spain are the new URSS....).
BTW it seems that most of the people suffering from Katrina, were in need long before, and probably will still be in need long after. I hope Katrina helps to create a state of awarness about this problems and unfairness that are present in the USA, and in a much larger extent in order regions of the world.
Or may be you could just keep complaining and being aware of the things that "inmediately affect yourself". This would be great to justify further tax cuts that inmeadiately benefit yourself.....( well that of course imply less welfare, less funds for public education, less health care for the needed, less money to prevent natural disasters and a lot of other insignificant stuff that doesnt inmediately affect you). And by extention, you also shouldnt care if your government chooses to refuse the Kyoto protocol, ignore the UN and World Bank calls for fairness in world trade, and why not, invade a couple of oil producers and then make the prices skyrocket for the profits of your campaign funders and coworkers. After all, it SEEMS that it doesnt inmediately affect you...... until you get robbed, or a relative gets killed or injured in a robbery, or until you are afraid enough to spend 10K in a shielded car or an alarm system, or until you have to pay 3,5 a gallon, or until your city is 20 feet under water.
You see, all this things are the results of other things that doesnt inmediately affect you. It makes no sense to complain about the outcome, and at the same time choose to ignore the cause.
