Re: GAS Prices at $4 tomorrow!!!

First of all, I apologize for coming off the way I did. You're a good guy, Rich, I know.

Yes, I know that scum is everywhere. I do know where the worst of it resides in this area, though, and it is in the trailer parks. I know that living in a trailer doesn't always mean being trash, but well, come on over here and take a look. There aren't nicely painted, kept up trailers. With rare exception, all of the crime that happens here is in the city, or in the parks. It's just a fact.

As I was trying to say, there isn't much of a choice to make. Here's a story- I was sitting on a friends front porch, who lives in one of the "better" parts of the city. His kids were out on the street playing, and came across a pickup truck. Well, what was in it left in a body bag... They get woken up by gunshots all the time... My wifes cousin's son had a bullet go through the wall, directly over his head where he was sleeping. In his CRIB... Like I said, it's not much of a choice to make. They had to move, even if they couldn't hardly afford it, simply because it was too dangerous to stay someplace more affordable. Another friend(of a friend) was stabbed to death while walking home.

I'll say it again- Not much of a choice to make. Struggle with money, or have gangbangers shoot up my house, potentially killing us. I'm not being dramatic here- I could go on about things that have happened. I choose safety!

(I also don't hardly live in a new development. I live in an older neighborhood, where, when we bought the house, we COULD afford it.)

Same here. In northern MI, we went up nearly $1.00 in less than 24 hours, and in a couple days, we dropped by almost $0.50 to around $3.00. Yesterday, we "dropped" to $2.99.

Re: GAS Prices at $4 tomorrow!!!

Excuse me guys, but I just dont get it. You live in the wealthiest country on earth, yet your quality of life or life standard is subpar to most developed western countries. A lot of the people have almost no healthcare and the ones who do have healthcare probably dont have full healthcare. Yet, its the country with the highest expenditure in the health sector. You have to move from one town to another (sometimes across the country) with all your family on your backs for an extra buck, a lot of you seem to be on the edge of loosing your jobs, adn your labour unions seem to be nonexistant. Yet, you seem to be fine with all this....

Again, we are talking about the wealthiest conuntry on earth. You have a serius wealth distribution problem.

America is one of the contries with less tax pressure, and welfare states are often demonized for not being as competitive. Well, Id rather pay a lot of taxes and be less competitive and yet be able to get a transplant for free if I needed it, or be able to send my kids to the university for free. Or have a society that includes everybody and I dont have to sleep with a shotgun under my pillow because Im paranoid about being robbed. IMHO This is what it really means to have the same oportunities in life.

Today the developement ranking of the UN was published. Norway, Switzerland, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Ireland and Sweeden among others are ranked above the USA. And this index measures averages!, wich clearly helps in the USA calification.

Its not about how much you got, its about how that money is distributed. Argentina, after 3 crisis and taking 7 ceros off the currency in the last 20 years (11 ceros in the last 30 years), after a colapse of 25% in the GDP meassured in local currency from 1998 to 2002, and a GDP collapse that reached 70% meassured in dollars in that same period is still the most developed Latin American country (ranked 34), followed by Chile (37) and Uruguay (41).

BTW, the collapse in Argentina hapened after 25 years of progressive (and 10 years of rapid) deregulation, tax cuts and "pro market" macroeconomic policies....

With a GDP percapita of less than 4500, its closer to Spain (21) with a percapita GDP of around 15000, than to Mexico (53) with a GDP percapita of around 7000 (almost twice Argentinas GDP per capita).

So, instead of complaning about the sacifices you have to make to have a decent life, that is still substandard compared to other deveolped countries in Europe, I suggest you take this thing in mind when you vote.

The New Orleans disaster is taking place at this very same moment, and people complain about GAS prices..... dont get me wrong but, it seems to me that there shouldnt be anything more important on the american public mind at this time.

Re: GAS Prices at $4 tomorrow!!!

Thank you, RCB, for your input but I don't want to live in a socialist country, which is exactly what you're describing. It may be where we're headed, though.

Yes, we live in the wealthiest nation, but it obviously is not without its issues.

To say that we are just complaining about gas prices while the New Orleans disaster is taking place is rather simplistic and judgmental on your part. We're talking about gas prices because we are immediately affected by them. Many of us are doing something to help the Katrina relief effort also.

Actually, we're in a republic. We don't vote on issues ourselves, we elect overpaid representatives who occasionally come in from golfing to vote on issues.

Re: GAS Prices at $4 tomorrow!!!

You guys might want to read this article, which contains some sobering statistics on what's at stake for living in the "wealthiest" nation.

The U.S. ranks very poorly among developed nations for the standard of living of the majority of its citizens.

Some other interesting articles by the same columnist (including several on the state of fuel prices and transportation):

This is what i can't figure out about prices in Canada, either. We get most of our oil domestically, and have our own refining capacity, yet our prices have jumped 30% since Tuesday.

I call BULL**** on the entire petroleum industry.
I would have thought the same thing. Apparently since they get it overseas, they are sharing their supply with the rest of the country at the moment and thus their prices skyrocketed as a result of them being the first stop on the list somehow. I am not sure how that works...

Re: GAS Prices at $4 tomorrow!!!

Ironically, Michael Ventura wrote a column called "$4 a gallon" back in April. You might want to read it to get a bigger picture of how screwed we really are.

Gas will not be getting cheaper. And it's going to affect every part of our lives, from transportation to the clothes we buy to the food we eat. Katrina has just accelerated things by a few months.

Re: GAS Prices at $4 tomorrow!!!

Darren,
Thank you for posting that article. I can't realy think of anything to say that won't get me flamed, so I'll just say I agree with what the article says. I appreciate Ventura's tone. It's a little frustrating when people criticise without an idea on how to improve something.

Thanks,
-Bennett

Im not describing socialist country or society at all. Im refering to equal opotunities, Im refering to justice and fairness. Most western europe countries work like this, and the are hardly comunist countries (unlesss you think Norway, Sweeden, France, Italy and Spain are the new URSS....).

BTW it seems that most of the people suffering from Katrina, were in need long before, and probably will still be in need long after. I hope Katrina helps to create a state of awarness about this problems and unfairness that are present in the USA, and in a much larger extent in order regions of the world.

Or may be you could just keep complaining and being aware of the things that "inmediately affect yourself". This would be great to justify further tax cuts that inmeadiately benefit yourself.....( well that of course imply less welfare, less funds for public education, less health care for the needed, less money to prevent natural disasters and a lot of other insignificant stuff that doesnt inmediately affect you). And by extention, you also shouldnt care if your government chooses to refuse the Kyoto protocol, ignore the UN and World Bank calls for fairness in world trade, and why not, invade a couple of oil producers and then make the prices skyrocket for the profits of your campaign funders and coworkers. After all, it SEEMS that it doesnt inmediately affect you...... until you get robbed, or a relative gets killed or injured in a robbery, or until you are afraid enough to spend 10K in a shielded car or an alarm system, or until you have to pay 3,5 a gallon, or until your city is 20 feet under water.

You see, all this things are the results of other things that doesnt inmediately affect you. It makes no sense to complain about the outcome, and at the same time choose to ignore the cause.
