Google Earth...

I didn't realise how cool this thing is, it's unleashed my inner geography geek! Although not everywhere (including where I live) is mapped out in high detail (yet, I hope) I've spent plenty of time looking for silly things.

Browsing around I've found Area 51: mapped out hi def, you can see peoples cars and stuff. No flying saucers sadly lol. Also of note: Tesco, Sidcup...where I work at the weekend!

It's fun seeing how big the world is and being able to pretty much have a God's eye view of everything. Good way to waste an hour or two.

Re: Google Earth...

I've been playing with this for a few weeks now. Trying to convince my boss to install it on all our public access computers at the library where I work lol

My home area isn't mapped in high detail either, but some major cities are just insane, and the grand canyon is awesome too. The guy that showed it to me set it on a slow sailing glide across the canyon and I got a little dizzy at first.

Re: Google Earth...

I found my house on Google Earth. It shows a vacant block of land across the street where a guy demolished the old house that was on there. He started building a new one 18 months ago so don't think it's a live feed.

Re: Google Earth...

No near as I can figure its about 2 years old.
I went to my old job and both my car and my friends car were there, and it was a brief time when I was there with that car

Re: Google Earth...

Yeah I hope one day everywhere is mapped out high-def and areas are updated regularly. It's only version 3 so give it a few years and who knows.

Re: Google Earth...

Nah haha I was looking for that and Niagra falls, my geography skills are lacking. I found Area 51 all by myself though

My friend went to China last week to Beijing and he visited the Great Wall so it must be nearby.

Re: Google Earth...

The great wall was aluding me too, I didn't think it would be that hard to miss but glad to hear I'm not alone lol

The pyramids were pretty cool to find too but I don't think I ever found the sphinx even though it's marked on their maps.

From what I read they said the images could be anywhere from 1 to 3 years old.
Still cool though!

Re: Google Earth...

Some must be older, as I was looking for the place where I went on holiday to spain for quite a few years and the whole 'urbanization' as they're called hadn't even been build. A lot of the beach area was pretty old looking too as the place (Calpe) started getting a bit more touristy and they made a lot more appartments along the beach front.

For those that are bored it's near the south east tip of spain, it's main attraction if the giant 'ifach' (a big rock) that sticks out to sea, it's easy to see even from quite far out.

Re: Google Earth...

thanks to the original poster for turning me on to this! i'm having a blast marking out all the places i've been around the globe... schools i attended... places i've lived... ex-girlfriend's houses*...

is there a higher res version of this concept out there (short of infiltrating military intelligence)?

*is this the ultimate stalking-from-space tool or what??

Re: Google Earth...

I think you'll have to wait as they update it...they make money for it from the people that advertise their companies and stuff on there so hopefully one day it'll all be high quality.
