Grand Tour Of America

A friend of mine and I, are thinking of packing in our jobs and pissing off around the globe for a year or so.

So, we thought as my friend isn't so flush with money, that rather than go from country to country, running up a flights bill, we'd get one flight to america, buy a cheap car and go from there.

Anyone here done anything like this? What do we need to get sorted apart from passport, insurance etc?

What kind of visa do we need and what do we need to do?

Is there anything we're likely to have missed?

Thanks guys.

Re: Grand Tour Of America

When i went to do something similar i was pretty much skint which is why i went and got a job straight away. Working somewhere abroad gives you a real taste of that country's culture. Plus where i was in Japan the strength of the local economy/currency meant it was really cheap to take my wages and head off to the neigbouring countries every holiday i had!

If you do go the America route then some kind of health insurance is about the most important thing to sort out (beyond the obvious visa/passport stuff)
A few days in hospital in the states with no insurance and no NHS could end up with your friend going from "not so flush" to "seriously in debt" pretty damn quickly!

You read my mind...

I would say the best thing is if asomeone tells you to avoid an area, perhaps you should heed that warning.
I went to Boston one year for school and someone said, 'Don't go into South Boston!"

So I'm in South Boston...

Wasn't bad, nothing happened, but at a few times I thought something might.

Stick with the world tour.....you could name it :

"Ant'n'friends 'how many countries can we get arrested in' World Tour"

Get tour t-shirts made up and stuff

Or you could see how many US jemsiters you could meet for a social tour

Re: Grand Tour Of America

I don't touch stella anywhere! Loopy juice!

Yeah, I sooo wanna do it, just gotta get what info we need.

So far, I'm thinking all we need is,

1. Passport
2. Visa
3. Money
4. One Way Ticket to the states
5. Insurance
6. Buy a chevy when we get there
7. Check out where to stay, or bunk up in the back of the chevy oi oi

Anything else?

Seriously though, I hope you and your mate get around to doing this. I had a chance years ago to go back-packing around Australia. I didn't go in the end and I still regret it now.
