Re: High definition video

SD3109 doesn't upconvert nor have HDMI

remember just because a player has HDMI doesn't mean it upconverts.

w/o upconverting the best a DVD player can do is send 480p after deinterlacing and 3:2 pulldown of course... glen

And still the picture looks great. You mean it could look better? Would I even notice with half the crap they put on DVD's today anyway? I'm glad I don't chase after every new gizmo these days

Re: High definition video

I meant my PLasma, not my DVD player. I need a new player, my Phillips component outs are not working (Overstock refurb for $45 pre HDTV) Once the Plasma made it home, I hooked up the Comp. cables and all of a sudden, all the images were blue. So I went back to my $300 sony that only plays studio released discs. Issue is, it's picky and annoying. Thought since I was buying a progressive player that I'd be happy with it down the road, nope.

So I just need to get something that will maximize the existing media I have at this piont.

Re: High definition video

The golf channel is in HD right now, it's Comcrap so you never know what 207 will be this week or next. This week it's golf

I watched Flyboys the other night and the picture was superb. If it gets better, great, I'll be asking you [again] what I should get. But for right now [until all the different techs work out the vhs/beta wars] I'm prefectly fine watching widescreen DVD's on my $15 Toshiba

if you want something now, honestly look for a Toshiba HD-A2 if $350-400 is in budget. Great upconverting, robust performer and you can play HD-DVDs if you're so inclined or a netflix member. It's hard to say if future, cheaper models will upconvert as well as they build them cheaper with more "do it all" chips. The A1 was built like a tank and is essentially a P4 computer with 1GB RAM!

If you're more a playstation person who swears by sony i'd say grab a blu-ray player except that none of them upconvert near as well (PS3 doesn't upconvert DVD) and stand-alone units are closer to $1k. in that case you need wait it out -- maybe by xmas??? ...glen

Re: High definition video

Word of caution, you will not be getting movies from some major studios with HD-DVD. "Casino Royale"? Forget it, it's a Sony flix. Disney/Pixar? Forget that too. There's only one studio exclusive to HD-DVD - Universal. There are quite a few that are exclusive to Blu Ray.

Also Blu Ray camp seems to be embracing uncompressed audio, just because they can (50GB, baby!).

Re: High definition video

come on... don't be a company/format sales drone.... i've been listening to TrueHD audio since summertime.

if you want 100% compatability stick to DVD and a good upconverter ($400 HD-A2, $800 HD-XA2, $1k denons for example).

until COMBO players (hd-dvd and bluray) are release, owners of HD-DVD and Bluray devices are limited to only software their player supports. one COMBO player is available from LG and it's said the hardware makers will produce more this year or next.

Blu-ray has some nice theoretical features but decks are $1000 that do simple upconversion of DVD and the only remotely affordable one (samsung BP-1000) is a total lemon and still $575 at clearance sites. PS3 doesn't upconvert, lacks analog audio out and doesn't even work with IR remotes (which is annoying or i'd probably budget one this summer). Casino Royale is probably the best "system seller" for me but one movie isnt' going to make me or anyone i know spend $500-1000 anytime soon... glen

Re: High definition video

I bet you won't see TrueHD on any HD-DVD movies longer than 2 hours. Majority of Blu Ray disks have lossles audio even now.

Also, think about it, if Universal gives up on HD DVD, there will be no need to support both standards in players. All movies will be available on Blu Ray. Given that Blu Ray also has a much larger installed base (because of PS3), I think the probability of Universal giving up grows higher every day.

There's no way in heck Sony will give up, ever, particularly considering broader industry support and studio support they're enjoying. And Sony owns quite a bit of US entertainment industry.

Re: High definition video

Speaking of PS3, why in the world would you need analog audio out when you have both HDMI and optical outs? And what makes you think PS3 will not upconvert in the future. It's not like there's a hardware bottleneck there.

wrong.

i've already watched Batman Begins (140min, not on bluray), V for Vendetta (132min - not on bluray) and Superman Returns 154min) well over 2 hours

for a smart guy you are really uninformed and/or totally seduced by brand names and hype.

analogs out are for FULL RES UNMOLESTED AUDIO. Without them you need HDMI v1.3 out from player (no player except PS3 has these and and what PS3 that supports audio wise is still *unknown*).... THEN you also need HDMI v1.3 INPUT in your amp/processor.

Get a grip... people with EXPENSIVE, QUALITY processors will stick with analog out 6 or 8-ch not "hdmi v1.3". Like i'm going to throw away my equipment and upgrade to HDMI v1.3 becuase you and sony said i should, even though they have no benefits to customers, except DRM.

ROTFLMAO ...glen

Re: High definition video

Maybe Sony will realease a patch or a downloadable update for upconversion.

There have been recent system updates/fixes for the PS3 that includes making 720p games work on 1080i onlyTVs (lol!), and fixing backwards compatability (it now supports PS1 and PS2 games in pro scan).

Re: High definition video

maybe they will, maybe they will not.

Either way with a $499 pricetag, no upscaling DVD, no IR remote and no analog outputs (to play TrueHD on your 2 year old receiver), the PS3 doesn't qualify for a I MUST BUY THIS NOW home theater item anytime soon.

YMMV... glen
