Home Theater/Stereo Speakers vs. Studio Monitors

Sorry if this should go into the "recording studio" topic instead.

Why don't people who are audiophilles or into home theater use top of the line studio monitors instead of top of the line home audio gear? If audiophiles care about accuracy and hearing things as the artist intended, and studio monitors are what are used in recording studios, then what makes high end home audio speakers so special? What is the difference, in general, between a $2000 home audio speaker and a $2000 studio monitor speaker? I'm probably missing something but I've always wondered about this.

monitors are mostly designed for near-field (close) listening and have significant low-frequency rolloff. $3k home audio speakers would be a much smarter investment for your home theater.

Generally speaking studio monitors sound crap. They have a flat frequency responce. They sound crap basically so if you get something sounding good on them, then it will sound awesome in a home stereo situation.

I should add they are for a different purpose. Studio monitors are actually designed for mixing, home audio speakers are designed for the best sound in a standard home sized room.

No actually I'm not. It's just something I've wondered when I look through mail order catalogs and electronics stores. I'm far too broke to buy anything that cool. :-)
